The police are a body of uniformed persons responsible for enforcing the law. They operate within law enforcement agencies and ensure public and social order. Police appear, in some way or form, in every Grand Theft Auto title.
Police are also colloquially referred to as the babylon, cops, coppers, Five-O, flat-feet, fuz, heat, pigs, or the popo within the series and amongst various different ethnic groups, countries and regions.
In the Grand Theft Auto series, the main purpose of the police is to enforce law and order within the game's open-world environment. Their primary function is to respond to criminal activities committed by the player or NPCs (non-player characters), such as theft, assault, or other violations of the in-game law. The extent to which they respond and indeed react to crimes such as these varies depending on the title, but always remain a constant threat to players engaging in criminal activities, adding an element of challenge and risk to the gameplay experience.
Police in the GTA series generally operate by patrolling the streets in vehicles or on foot, and they react dynamically to criminal behavior. When a player commits a crime, such as attacking civilians, stealing vehicles, or engaging in gunfights, nearby police officers will be alerted and begin pursuing the player to apprehend or neutralize them.
Alongside regular patrols, police are dispatched to respond to crimes committed by the player. The amount of law enforcement and the power they operate with depends on the player's Wanted Level.
