Twitch's CEO Says GTA 6 Multiplayer Launches 'Next Year', After Talking to Rockstar

The most specific public statement yet about when GTA 6's online mode arrives did not come from Rockstar. It came from Twitch. In an interview with Bloomberg at Tokyo Game Show, published September 17, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy said his company has spent "a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans," and that the viewership surge from GTA 6's November launch will be followed by "an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer."

Rockstar has not confirmed a GTA 6 multiplayer mode, let alone a 2027 date, and Bloomberg itself frames Clancy's line as something he anticipates rather than something he was told to announce. But it is the head of the biggest game-streaming platform, describing the outcome of meetings with Rockstar, in a sentence that does not sound like a guess. What Clancy actually said

The full quote, as reported by Bloomberg and relayed by Kotaku, PC Gamer and TheSixthAxis:

"We spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans, and also helping them think about how they can engage our creators. You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer."

The interview was about GTA 6's effect on Twitch, and the headline advice was aimed at other publishers: Clancy believes the game will hold gamers' attention until at least January, and that studios are right to keep their own launches out of its way. On his own platform, he expects the launch to bring back lapsed viewers and streamers. "It absolutely will spike the overall viewership meaningfully," he said. "How much I have no idea."

Why this is not an announcement

Three reasons to keep the excitement in check. First, Bloomberg characterises the multiplayer timing as Clancy's anticipation, not a Rockstar statement. Second, Clancy does not speak for Rockstar; as PC Gamer put it, "it's a safe bet that Clancy is not authorized to make such an announcement," even if his comment "doesn't sound speculative." Third, both Kotaku and PC Gamer asked Rockstar for comment, and as of publication there is no response.

What makes the line hard to dismiss is the first half of it. Twitch's CEO says his team has been in extended planning conversations with Rockstar about how to engage creators around GTA 6. If those talks touched on a multiplayer window, "next year" is an informed expectation from someone who has been in the room. What Rockstar and Take-Two have actually said

The official position has not moved. PlayStation.com's GTA 6 page answers the question "Does Grand Theft Auto VI have any multiplayer modes or features?" with one sentence: "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience." The only other number in the public record is 32, a player count that surfaced through the UK employment tribunal over Rockstar's firings. Put it all together and the picture is consistent: a multiplayer mode is clearly planned, it is not launching on November 19, and nobody official has said when.

What "next year" would actually mean

If Clancy is right, GTA 6 would break with how Rockstar has launched online modes for over a decade. GTA Online went live on October 1, 2013, two weeks after GTA V. Red Dead Online opened its beta on November 27, 2018, a month after Red Dead Redemption 2. A 2027 launch for GTA 6's online mode would mean a gap measured in months at minimum, and possibly close to a year.

That would not be an accident.
