GTA 6's $100 Ultimate Edition Is Outselling the $80 Standard, and Take-Two's CEO Just Confirmed It
The version fans complained about the loudest is the one they are buying the most. On the earnings call, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed GTA 6 preorders are skewing toward the $100 Ultimate Edition, with one important caveat about who is buying right now.

There is a neat little irony sitting at the center of the GTA 6 pricing fight. The $100 Ultimate Edition is the version the internet complained about the loudest, the "greedy" tier that costs more and tucks some content behind the higher price. It is also the version fans are buying the most. On the earnings call, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed it out loud: GTA 6 preorders are skewing toward the premium edition. Here is what he said, and the caveat he attached to it.
What Zelnick confirmed
Asked about the split between the $80 Standard Edition and the $100 Ultimate Edition, Zelnick said preorders are "skewing more toward the premium edition." In plain terms, the pricier version is leading. He added that reception for both editions has been "exceptional" and that preorders overall have "gone much better than expected," part of the same "unprecedented and astonishing" language we covered in the Q1 results.
So this is not a leak or a datamine. The company's CEO is telling investors the expensive edition is winning.
The caveat that matters
Zelnick did not present it as a permanent trend, though, and the qualifier is worth keeping. He suggested the skew toward Ultimate "might be a reflection of the fact that the most avid consumers are the ones who are pre-ordering now."
That is a fair point. The people who preorder a game months early are, almost by definition, the die-hards, the ones most likely to splurge on the premium tier. As launch approaches and more casual buyers come in, the mix could even out or tilt back toward the cheaper Standard Edition. He also cautioned that early interest does not always predict final sales, and signaled buyers should not count on a holiday discount.
The data says the same thing
It is not just the CEO's read, either. The $100 Ultimate Edition has topped the PlayStation Store preorder charts in nine separate global markets, and multiple preorder reports have shown the premium version outselling the standard one. The "avid fans buy the expensive edition first" pattern is showing up in the actual charts, not just on the earnings call.
Why the irony is the story
Here is what makes this more than a sales note. The Ultimate Edition is the exact version that got branded anti-consumer. It took heat for its price and for placing some content behind the higher tier, the argument we broke down in the Ultimate Edition paywall debate. And yet, when it came time to spend, fans reached for that edition over the cheaper one.
That gap between what people say online and what they buy is a big part of why Zelnick can stand on a call and say Rockstar got the pricing right. The premium edition leading preorders is his evidence.
Should you follow the crowd?
Popular does not automatically mean right for you. Whether the extra $20 is worth it depends on how much you care about the bonus vehicles, weapons, and apparel bundled into Ultimate, which is exactly what our Standard vs Ultimate guide is for. The takeaway from Zelnick's comments is not "buy Ultimate," it is that demand for the pricier tier is real and strong.
The bottom line
The most expensive GTA 6 edition is currently the best-selling one, confirmed by the CEO himself. The open question is whether that holds as more casual buyers join closer to November, or whether it is just the early diehards front-loading the premium tier. Either way, for now, the edition everyone loved to hate is the one winning the preorder race.
