Is Trevor in GTA 6? Will Any GTA 5 Characters Return?
Trevor, Michael, Franklin, even Tommy Vercetti: fans want the classics back for GTA 6. Here is the officially-sourced answer on who is actually returning (nobody from GTA 5, so far), why a playable return is unlikely, and how to spot the fake 'confirmed' headlines.

It is one of the most-asked GTA 6 questions on the internet: is Trevor in GTA 6, and will any Grand Theft Auto 5 characters come back? The short, officially-sourced answer is no, Rockstar has not confirmed a single returning character from GTA 5, and the entire named cast of GTA 6 is new. Here is what is actually known, what is just fan hope, and how to spot the fake "confirmed" headlines that circulate constantly.
The short answer
Rockstar Games has confirmed none of GTA 5's characters for Grand Theft Auto 6. Not Trevor Philips, not Michael De Santa, not Franklin Clinton. The two confirmed protagonists, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, are brand new, and every named supporting character Rockstar has introduced (Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Brian Heder, Dre'Quan Priest, Raul Bautista, Real Dimez) is new to the series. If you see a headline claiming a GTA 5 character is "confirmed" for GTA 6, it is not coming from Rockstar.
The actors want to come back, but that is not a confirmation
This is where most of the confusion starts. The GTA 5 cast has been openly enthusiastic about returning. Steven Ogg (Trevor), Ned Luke (Michael) and Shawn Fonteno (Franklin) have all said publicly that they would love for their characters to appear in the next Grand Theft Auto, and Ogg has even floated his own ideas for how Trevor could show up. The trio's friendly social-media posts together fuel a return rumor every few months.
But actor enthusiasm is not a casting announcement. Wanting to return and being cast to return are two very different things, and Rockstar has made no such announcement. Treat "the actors would love to come back" as exactly what it is: a nice sentiment, not news.
Why a playable return is unlikely anyway
Even setting aside the lack of confirmation, a major or playable GTA 5 character in GTA 6 would break Rockstar's own pattern. Every mainline Grand Theft Auto since the 3D era has starred new protagonists: CJ, then Niko, then Michael/Trevor/Franklin, and now Lucia and Jason. Rockstar does not carry its leads across mainline entries.
What the games do share is a universe. GTA 4, GTA 5 and GTA 6 all exist in the same "HD Universe," which is why cameos, radio mentions, references and Easter eggs are genuinely possible. A throwaway news report, a returning brand, or a background reference to a GTA 5 figure would fit Rockstar's habits. A drivable, talking, plot-relevant Trevor would not. So "return" in the form of a wink is plausible; "return" as a real character is not on the table, and certainly not confirmed.
What about Tommy Vercetti?
Classic-era fans have their own wish: Tommy Vercetti, the Vice City kingpin, especially now that GTA 6 brings Vice City back as a setting. Here the situation is more complicated, and genuinely poignant. Tommy was voiced by the late actor Ray Liotta, who died on May 26, 2022. Any faithful Tommy appearance would now require recasting one of gaming's most iconic performances, which makes a true return both unlikely and bittersweet.
It is also worth being precise: Rockstar bringing back Vice City the place is confirmed, but that is the city, not the character. Tommy lived in the older "3D Universe," a separate continuity from the HD-Universe games, so a direct Tommy appearance would be a cross-continuity event Rockstar has never done in a mainline title. A neon-soaked nod to the 1980s Vice City era is plausible. Tommy himself walking back on screen is not something Rockstar has hinted at, let alone confirmed.
How to spot the fake claims
Returning-character rumors are one of the most common forms of fake GTA 6 news. A quick filter:
- If the "source" is anything other than the Rockstar Newswire, it is not confirmed.
- "The actor said he'd love to return" is not a confirmation.
- A datamine, a leaker, an AI-generated clip, or a "trust me" post is not a confirmation.
- The named GTA 6 cast is entirely new. Any claim that contradicts that is the thing to be skeptical of.
The honest read
For now, the answer to "is Trevor in GTA 6" is a clean no, not confirmed, and the same goes for every other GTA 5 character and for Tommy Vercetti. GTA 6 is a fresh story with two new leads in a new era. A nostalgic cameo or Easter egg somewhere in the HD Universe would surprise no one, but a real, confirmed return of a past protagonist is not something Rockstar has announced. If that ever changes, it will come from one place: an official Rockstar post.
