GTA San Andreas Beginner Guide: 14 Things to Do First
A GTA San Andreas beginner guide with 14 starting tips: eat to avoid starving, build muscle and stamina, save at the Johnson house, recruit homies, and more.

This GTA San Andreas beginner guide collects the 14 things every new player should do first, because San Andreas is the entry where CJ became a character you actually have to maintain. He gets hungry, builds or loses muscle, earns respect, and picks up a wanted level if you push the cops too hard. These starting tips keep you out of trouble while you find your feet on Grove Street.
Eat regularly so CJ does not starve
CJ has a hunger system. If you go 48 in-game hours without eating anything, he starts to starve: his fat drains away, and once the fat is gone he begins burning muscle and then health, and he can eventually die. Grab a meal at Cluckin' Bell, Burger Shot, or Well Stacked Pizza, or hit a street vendor or vending machine, before that timer runs down. A solid meal also restores health, so it doubles as cheap healing. Keeping CJ fed is the simplest survival habit in the game.
Do not overeat in one sitting
Stuffing CJ with too many meals back to back makes him vomit: eat 11 meals inside any 6 in-game hours and the next one tips him over. When he pukes, all the fat gained from that binge is wiped from his stats, so the overeating gains you nothing. Eat to fill the meter, then stop. Saving your game, eating during a date, or grabbing a health pickup also resets the hunger counter, so you rarely need a marathon feeding session.
Build muscle and stamina at the gym
The Ganton gym in Los Santos sits a short walk from home and is marked with a red dumbbell on the map. It opens after a phone call from Sweet following the Drive-Thru mission. Use the weights to add muscle (which boosts melee damage and durability) and the treadmill or bike to raise stamina so CJ can sprint and swim longer. There is a session cap: lose 40% fat or gain 20% muscle or stamina in a day and you are benched for 12 in-game hours.
Keep a little fat, never zero
Counterintuitively, you want CJ to carry a small amount of fat. Building muscle needs fuel, and if his fat is gone, hard exercise or starvation starts eating into muscle instead. Order a light option when you want a low-impact meal, and save the high-fat burgers and pizza for when you are deliberately bulking. A thin layer of fat is your buffer against losing the muscle you worked to build.
Save your game at the Johnson house
Your first safehouse is the Johnson house on Grove Street in Ganton. It unlocks for free after the early mission Sweet & Kendl. Walk into the red save marker to save, which advances the in-game clock by six hours, resets your hunger meter, and clears any wanted level off CJ instantly. There is no autosave in the classic version, so a botched mission or bad chase can cost real progress. Save before and after anything risky.
Grab early weapons around Grove Street
You do not need money to arm CJ early. A free pistol spawns behind the second house north of Sweet's place on Grove Street, so grab it on your first walk around the block. The bigger payoff is the 100 spray tags across rival Los Santos turf: paint over all of them and four weapons permanently respawn in the Johnson house kitchen, an AK-47, a Sawn-Off Shotgun, Molotov Cocktails, and a TEC-9. That is a full early loadout for free.
Learn how respect works
Respect is San Andreas's social stat, and it governs how big your crew can get. You earn it by completing missions and by taking enemy territory. The cap rises in clear steps: 2 homies above 1% respect, then 3 above 10%, 4 above 20%, 5 above 40%, 6 above 60%, and a full squad of 7 above 80%. Treat respect as the meter that unlocks your firepower on the street.
Recruit gang members the right way
To recruit a Grove Street homie, aim at a gang member in a green shirt, then on console hold the target button and press Up on the d-pad, or on PC hold the right mouse button and press G. Press the follow command to move them and the hold command to make them stay. One catch: most cars, boats and aircraft only carry about four recruits at a time, even when seven are trailing you on foot. Bring backup before a fight and a risky gang war becomes manageable.
Understand territory and gang wars
Territory control unlocks after the Doberman mission, where Sweet teaches you to seize Glen Park from the Ballas. To start a gang war, walk into enemy turf and kill at least three enemy gang members on foot. That triggers three escalating waves of counterattacks. Survive them and the territory turns Grove Street green. There are 53 territories in Los Santos; you do not need them all to progress, but each held zone raises respect and pays daily cash, making it the most reliable early income.
Boost CJ's sex appeal
Sex appeal decides how easily you can date girlfriends, and it is driven by presentation, not strength. Roughly half comes from CJ's appearance (expensive clothes, fresh haircuts, tattoos) and half from the car you last drove, with a clean sports car or lowrider giving the biggest boost. Fat and muscle do not raise sex appeal (and maxing muscle to 100% actually drags it down). A tuxedo or a colored jacket gives a big clothing boost, and flashy cars add more. The permanent shortcut is to collect all 50 Oysters hidden in the water, which lets every girlfriend date CJ regardless of his sex appeal (and maxes lung capacity along with it).
Do not provoke a high wanted level early
Early on, the cops are your biggest threat because CJ is weak and underarmed. In the opening hours the wanted level caps at 4 stars; five only becomes possible after The Green Sabre opens San Fierro, so you will not face the full six-star response yet. Avoid street shootouts, and do not try to cross the bridges out of Los Santos before the story opens them.
Know how to shake the police
When you do attract heat, you have cheaper options than a body count. Police bribe pickups (the rotating yellow star icons scattered around the map) each remove one star. Saving at a safehouse or changing clothes at any wardrobe or clothing shop clears all stars at once. At two or three stars, simply ducking into a quiet alley out of the officers' line of sight lets the meter cool off on its own.
Use Grove Street as your home base
Everything you need early sits near Grove Street: the Ganton gym, the Johnson house save point, the free pistol, Ammu-Nation after Doberman, and rival turf to fight over. Anchor your early hours here and only push outward when the story opens new districts. The full San Andreas game hub lists the missions, locations and entities tied to each area.
Take the missions in order at first
San Andreas branches quickly, but as a beginner, follow the main story markers (the colored letter icons) before chasing side content. The early Sweet and Ryder missions teach the core systems: driving, the gym, gang wars, and recruiting. Once CJ has some muscle and a steady income from territory, you can break off for collectibles and races with far less frustration. When you want to bend the rules later, our San Andreas cheats list collects the working codes.
