GTA 5 Derailed: The First-Jump Trick, the 11:30 Timer, and All Three Gold Medals
Derailed is Trevor's train robbery, and its Gold Medal includes an objective called Better Than CJ, a direct dig at San Andreas. You have to land on the train from the first jump. Here is how to clear all three requirements.

Derailed is Trevor's train job, and it carries the best-named Gold Medal objective in GTA 5. One of the three requirements is called Better Than CJ, a straight shot at every player who spent hours failing "Wrong Side of the Tracks" in San Andreas two decades ago. Rockstar is daring you to do it right first time.
The three Gold Medal objectives
- Time. Complete the mission within 11:30.
- Fastest Speed. Reach top speed on the Sanchez.
- Better Than CJ. Land on the train using the first jump.
Better Than CJ is the one that matters
This is the objective that decides whether you replay. You get a ramp and a run at the moving train, and Gold requires you to make the transition on your first attempt. Miss it, and the mission lets you continue and catch up, but the medal tick is gone for that run.
Two things help. First, commit to the throttle. The common failure is braking on approach out of nerves, which leaves you short and drops you behind the train. Second, line up early. Do not steer mid-air. Get the bike straight and matching the train's line well before the ramp so the jump only has to solve distance, not angle.
Fastest Speed is free if you stop being careful
"Reach top speed on the Sanchez" sounds like a separate challenge and is really just permission to stop riding cautiously. Hold the throttle on any clear straight and it ticks over on its own. Riders lose it by feathering the bike through the whole approach because they are worried about the jump.
Usefully, riding flat out is also what makes Better Than CJ work, so these two objectives reward the same behavior. Ride it like you mean it.
The 11:30 timer is generous, unless you retry
Eleven and a half minutes is a comfortable window for the mission as designed. What kills it is failing the jump and chasing the train, which burns minutes recovering ground. In practice the timer is not really a separate objective, it is the penalty for missing the first jump.
Clear Better Than CJ and the clock takes care of itself.
Use replays to split the work
As with every Gold Medal in GTA 5, objectives accumulate across replays. If you fluff the jump, do not quit out in frustration. Finish the run, bank the time and top-speed ticks if you got them, then replay and focus purely on nailing the first jump.
The bottom line
Derailed comes down to one moment. Get the Sanchez straight and flat out before the ramp, take the jump without braking, and the timer and top-speed objectives fall into place around it.
