Lamar Davis: GTA 5's Loyal, Hilarious Breakout Star
Lamar Davis is GTA 5's breakout comic star: Franklin's loyal Families friend, the man behind the famous Lamar roast, and a GTA Online mainstay.

Lamar Davis is one of GTA 5's most beloved supporting characters, a loud, loyal, and frequently hilarious member of The Families who grew from a sidekick role into a full breakout star. He is Franklin Clinton's best friend, the source of some of the game's funniest moments, and a character whose popularity carried him into a major expanded role across GTA Online. Voiced by stand-up comedian Gerald "Slink" Johnson, Lamar became a fan favorite long after the 2013 launch.
Who Is Lamar Davis in GTA 5
Lamar Davis, nicknamed "LD," is a proud member of The Families, the gang that operates out of the Chamberlain Hills and Grove Street area of South Los Santos. He and Franklin go back to their Davis High School days, and the two work together repossessing cars at Premium Deluxe Motorsport when the story begins. Lamar splits his time between that legitimate job and the street life of dealing and car theft.
Rockstar describes Lamar as "a good kind of crazy." He is lazy, blindly trusting, and quick to chase a bad idea, which makes him the comedic opposite of the more cautious, ambition-driven Franklin. Where Franklin wants out of the gang, Lamar keeps pulling him back in, constantly pushing schemes and needling his friend about going legit. For more on the cast and setting, see our GTA 5 hub.
Lamar's Loyalty to Franklin
Underneath the loud talk and questionable plans, Lamar's defining trait is loyalty. He is Franklin's ride-or-die from the opening missions, and the friendship anchors much of Franklin's arc. Their bond is tested repeatedly, most dramatically in the late-game mission "Lamar Down."
In that mission, Lamar is set up by his former friend Stretch, who feeds him to the Ballas. They hold Lamar hostage at the Paleto Forest Sawmill. Franklin is exhausted by years of bailing Lamar out, but when Tanisha asks him to step up, he agrees. Knowing the Ballas will overwhelm him alone, Franklin calls in Michael De Santa and Trevor Philips to storm the sawmill and rescue Lamar. On the drive home the two argue about their past, with Lamar accusing Franklin of abandoning him, a rare serious beat that grounds the comedy in real history between them.
The Lamar Roast and His Comedy
Lamar is the comic engine of the entire game, and one scene cemented his legend. During the early mission Franklin and Lamar, he relentlessly mocks Franklin's "ol' yee-yee ass haircut" in a profanity-soaked tirade that fans now simply call the Lamar roast.
The scene shipped with GTA 5 on its September 17, 2013 release and slowly built into one of the most-quoted moments in the series. The roast surged into a full-blown meme through 2020 and into early 2021, spreading through countless edits and remixes. The original performers leaned into the joke directly: Slink Johnson and Franklin's actor Shawn Fonteno recreated the roast in real life in a video posted by the YouTube channel PlayStation Haven on January 12, 2021, which racked up millions of views within a day. Lamar's timing and delivery, courtesy of Johnson's stand-up background, are why so many of his lines stuck.
Lamar's Families Ties
Lamar's gang affiliation drives a lot of his story. As a member of The Families, he sits inside the long-running Los Santos gang rivalry that defines South Los Santos, especially the feud with the Ballas. His connection to street figures like Stretch is what eventually puts him in danger, and it is also the reason Franklin keeps getting dragged back into conflicts he is trying to leave behind.
That tension, Lamar fully committed to the set while Franklin tries to climb out, is the spine of their friendship. It makes Lamar more than comic relief: he is a constant reminder of where Franklin came from and what he risks losing if he changes too much. Lamar's Expanded Role in GTA Online
Lamar's popularity earned him a far bigger presence in GTA Online. He is the first friendly face new players meet: in the Introduction mission he pulls up to Los Santos International Airport in his Emperor, picks the player up, and kicks off the tutorial with the Mall or Nothing race before handing players off to contacts like Gerald. For years, that opening made Lamar the literal voice that welcomed millions into the online experience.
His role grew again with The Contract update (version 1.58), released on December 15, 2021. That update added Short Trips, a series of three co-op missions where one player plays Franklin and the other plays Lamar. The story follows Lamar launching a legitimate cannabis venture called LD Organics and recruiting Franklin to wreck the Vagos' weed storage facilities in Blaine County as payback for them destroying his stash.
The Contract also delivered fresh comedy. A cutscene in the Short Trip mission "Fire It Up" features Lamar roasting Franklin all over again, a deliberate callback to the meme that made the character a phenomenon. Short Trips initially unlocked after completing The Contract's Dr. Dre storyline, but from the Valentine's Day 2022 event week onward, all players could launch them directly from the pause menu.
Why Lamar Became a Breakout Character
Lamar works because he blends genuine heart with relentless humor. He is loyal to Franklin to the point of self-destruction, funny enough to spawn one of gaming's most enduring memes, and rooted firmly in the Families street culture that makes Los Santos feel alive. Slink Johnson's performance turned a supporting role into one of the most quotable, recognizable characters in the entire franchise. From the GTA Online airport pickup to the LD Organics missions years later, Rockstar kept finding new ways to put Lamar front and center, and players kept loving him for it.
