More than a decade on, players are still digging into GTA 5's secrets. Some are confirmed Easter eggs, some are community legend. Here are the biggest ones and exactly how to find them.
The Mount Chiliad mystery
At the top of Mount Chiliad, inside the cable-car station, there is a hand-painted mural covered in odd symbols: a UFO, a jetpack, an egg, and an all-seeing eye linked by lines. For years it fuelled wild theories about a hidden jetpack in story mode. The widely accepted reading today is more grounded: the egg symbol represents 100% completion, the line running up to the eye points to the UFO that appears over Chiliad once you hit 100%, and the jetpack hinted at a feature that later arrived in GTA Online's Doomsday Heist, not story mode.
The UFOs
There are confirmed UFOs in story mode, and they appear only after you reach 100% completion. Three show up: one hovering above Mount Chiliad (it needs stormy weather and the early-morning hours to be visible), one cloaked above Fort Zancudo, and one over the Sandy Shores area. They are atmosphere, not interactive, but they are real and tied directly to finishing the game.
The Enhanced edition added 27 peyote plants across the map. Eat one and you hallucinate, taking control of a random animal (collecting the 21 land-based plants unlocks every controllable animal and the Cryptozoologist achievement). The deeper secret: once you have 100% completion, have finished Franklin's stranger mission "The Last One", and have found all 27 plants, golden peyote plants begin to spawn, one per day of the week, only between 5:30 and 8:00 AM in snowy or foggy weather. Eating one turns you into Sasquatch, and eating all seven across the week triggers a boss fight against the Beast.
The Ghost of Mount Gordo
Head to the summit of Mount Gordo and wait. Between 23:00 and midnight, the ghost of Jolene Cranley-Evans appears, hovering over a bloodstain that spells out a name. The story goes that she was pushed to her death by her husband, and the name in blood is his. Approach her and she vanishes. It is one of the eeriest, most reliably reproducible Easter eggs in the game.
What is real vs legend
The UFOs, the ghost, the Bigfoot/Beast hunt and the peyote animals are all confirmed and reproducible. The "hidden jetpack on Mount Chiliad" that obsessed the community for years was not in story mode; the mural was pointing at 100% completion and content that arrived later in GTA Online. If you want to see the real secrets, the throughline is clear: get to 100% first, and most of the map's biggest surprises open up.
