GTA 6 Age Rating Is Final: Rated M and PEGI 18, and a Deleted PEGI Summary Described Snorting Cocaine, Private Dances and Decapitation
GTA 6 is officially rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB, PEGI 18 in Europe and R18+ in Australia, with 'Sex Scenes' on the Australian and New Zealand labels. A detailed PEGI summary went up and was quickly deleted: it described cocaine you can snort 'at any time', paid private dances, 'scenes of intercourse' and 'detailed decapitation and dismemberment'. Here is every rating, every content warning, and what the deleted text said.

GTA 6 finally has its age rating, and nobody is surprised by the number. The ESRB has rated Grand Theft Auto VI M for Mature 17+, PlayStation's European store shows PEGI 18, Australia's shows R18+ and New Zealand's R18. The surprise was a PEGI content summary that appeared on the board's own website on October 2 and was deleted the same day. It went far beyond the usual one-word labels, and it described things Rockstar's trailers never have: cocaine you can carry and snort "at any time", private dances where you can touch the dancers, "scenes of intercourse" and weapons that cause "detailed decapitation and dismemberment".
Two weeks ago we wrote that GTA 6's rating was still pending. That is no longer true. Here is every rating we could verify on October 6, every content warning, and what the deleted PEGI text actually said.
GTA 6 age ratings by region

| Region | Rating | Content warnings |
|---|---|---|
| United States and Canada (ESRB) | M for Mature 17+ | Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol. In-Game Purchases |
| UK and Europe (PEGI) | 18 | Drugs, Sexual Content, Extreme Violence, Nudity, In-Game Purchases |
| Australia | R18+ | Drug Use, High Impact Violence, Sex Scenes |
| New Zealand | R18 | Drug Use, Graphic Violence, Nudity, Offensive Language, Sex Scenes |
The US, UK, Australian and New Zealand ratings are the ones we checked ourselves on PlayStation's regional GTA VI pages. Rockstar's own GTA VI website now lists the same seven ESRB descriptors and the In-Game Purchases notice. In September it showed a Rating Pending badge. GTA BOOM also found 21 age badges on the Saudi and UAE PlayStation stores.
What the ESRB rating says
The ESRB's entry for Grand Theft Auto VI, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, reads in full: "Grand Theft Auto VI is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB with Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. Also includes In-Game Purchases."
That is the whole summary. For now the ESRB has published only the short version, without the long paragraph that explains what is in the game. Those seven descriptors are exactly the ones GTA 5 got. GTA 5's long ESRB summary describes "rare depictions of dismemberment", a "topless lap dance in a strip club" and says "cocaine use is also depicted". Keep those three lines in mind when you read what PEGI wrote about GTA 6.
What the deleted PEGI summary said
PEGI's game pages usually explain a rating in a short paragraph. GTA 6's went up on the PEGI website on October 2 and was removed later that day: RockstarINTEL logged the removal at 8pm UK time, and a search of PEGI's database for Grand Theft Auto VI returns no results as of October 6. Fans saved it before it went, and Eurogamer, PC Gamer, RockstarINTEL and GTA BOOM all reported its text. PEGI has not explained why the page was pulled.
According to those reports, the summary said the game "features strong graphic violence, strong sexual themes, and use of illegal drugs", and then went into detail.

Drugs: cocaine "at any time"
“Drug use is frequent and prominent with the player being able to partake in drug use with others and to use illegal drugs directly from their inventory... cocaine can be carried around by the player and snorted directly from their hand at any time.”
This is the line that went viral, and it is a real change for the series. In GTA 5, drugs came in set moments, like a bong, a joint or a peyote trip, and the ESRB says cocaine use was "depicted". An inventory item you can use anywhere, alone or "with others", is a system, not a cutscene. The summary does not say what cocaine does to Jason or Lucia once they take it.
Sex: "scenes of intercourse" and private dances
“There are also strong sexual themes, including nudity, scenes of intercourse and occasional scenes of sexual fetishes. In various night clubs the player can also pay for private dances, during which, the game allows the player to move their hands onto the dancers' breasts and buttocks.”
Paid dances are old GTA territory. GTA 5 had them in the Vanilla Unicorn, and the ESRB described a "topless lap dance". "Scenes of intercourse" is the newer part.
Violence: "detailed decapitation and dismemberment"
“Violence is bloody with a high degree of realism, with certain weapons being able to cause greater damage such as detailed decapitation and dismemberment.”
GTA BOOM's reading of the summary adds that you can harm civilians, criminals and police, and that domestic animals can also be hurt, though RockstarINTEL's copy says the game "does not produce the same injury detail" on animals as on people. Compare GTA 5's "rare depictions of dismemberment": the wording suggests GTA 6's damage system goes further.
Language and the rest
RockstarINTEL's copy of the summary adds frequent strong language, including the f-word and occasional use of the c-word, and discriminatory language on the in-game TV shows and radio. On purchases, it said the game "offers players the opportunity to purchase in-game items", and that "the game can still be played without the need to purchase such items."
Is GTA 6 the first GTA with sex scenes?
The Australian and New Zealand labels say "Sex Scenes" in so many words, and the deleted PEGI text says "scenes of intercourse". As Eurogamer points out, GTA's sex has mostly happened off camera until now. The closest the series came was the Hot Coffee minigame, which Rockstar cut from San Andreas but left in the game files. A mod unlocked it in 2005, and San Andreas was re-rated Adults Only and pulled from US shelves, as our Hot Coffee explainer explains. Twenty years later, the content is in the rated game on purpose.
It also fits the story Rockstar is telling. GTA 6 is a relationship story about a couple, and Eurogamer points to a moment in an official trailer that looks like the start of one. None of the ratings say which characters or scenes earned the label.
Does GTA 6 have microtransactions?
Not as far as anything official says. The In-Game Purchases label is broader than it sounds. The ESRB uses it for paid DLC, expansions, upgrades and virtual currency, so it is not proof of Shark Cards. GTA BOOM points to a paid Ultimate Edition upgrade already listed on the stores, and the deleted PEGI text says the game can be played without buying anything.
PlayStation's own GTA 6 FAQ still describes it as "a single-player experience", and Rockstar has not announced an online mode. If one arrives later, as most people expect, we explain what we know here.
What this changes from our September report
On September 22 we reported that the ESRB and PEGI had not published a final rating, and that Rockstar's site showed Rating Pending. Both are now out of date: the ESRB lists GTA 6 as M 17+, and the PEGI 18 badge is on PlayStation's European pages even though the PEGI database entry has gone. We also reported an MA 15+ listing in Australia. PlayStation's Australian store now shows R18+. We could not reach the Australian Classification Board's database to see which listing is current, so treat the store badge as the one buyers will see.
None of this is a "gone gold" signal. A rating means the boards have reviewed the game's content; it does not mean development is finished.
