Can GTA 6 Win Game of the Year? Why The Game Awards Timeline Works Against It, and Where It Still Can Win
GTA 6 launches November 19, three weeks before The Game Awards on December 10, and a Game Awards juror says jurors cannot realistically vote for it in time. Here is how the voting calendar works, the three ways it could go, and why BAFTA, whose 2027 window ends on GTA 6's launch day, and the D.I.C.E. Awards are the year-end awards to watch instead.

GTA 6 is the most anticipated game in years, so the Game of the Year argument started long before anyone has played it. But the calendar may settle it before the reviews do. GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026; The Game Awards is on December 10; and according to someone who has voted on The Game Awards jury several times, jurors simply cannot play an 80-hour game and vote for it in that window.
Here is how The Game Awards voting actually works, what the dates mean for GTA 6, and why the year-end award with the best shot at crowning it may be one that ends its eligibility window on GTA 6's launch day.
What a Game Awards juror said
The argument came from Alanah Pearce, the games writer and streamer, who has sat on The Game Awards jury multiple times. Responding to chat during a stream, she said, as reported by RockstarINTEL:
“"How could anyone finish the game in time? The game comes out on the 19th (November). There is no way that the jury is only voting on the 26th (November) and then the awards is 2 weeks later. It's usually like over a month in advance that people start voting."”
She then laid out last year's process: "Last year November 4th was the first round and then November 11 you could adjust your first round nominations and then they announced the nominees and you voted on the nominees on November 24th which was still 2 weeks before The Game Awards [ceremony]. So November 19 for people to play and vote on an 80 hour game if they made it there at all it would be indicative of a jury who voted for a game they didn't play."
When chat insisted The Game Awards would bend the rules for GTA 6, her reply was short: "they didn't for Cyberpunk."
How The Game Awards picks a Game of the Year
The Game Awards uses a jury of more than a hundred media outlets from around the world, chosen by an advisory committee that includes the platform holders. Winners are decided by a blend of the jury vote (90%) and a public fan vote (10%). Only the jury nominates.
Eligibility is set by a cutoff date in November: a game has to be out by then, and anything released later rolls into the following year's show. In 2025 the cutoff was Friday, November 21, the third Friday of the month.
Here is how last year's calendar ran, which is the best guide we have until The Game Awards publishes its 2026 dates:
| Step | 2025 date | Days before the show |
|---|---|---|
| First-round jury nominations | November 4 | 37 |
| Window to adjust nominations | November 11 | 30 |
| Nominees announced | November 17 | 24 |
| Eligibility cutoff | November 21 | 20 |
| Final jury vote | November 24 | 17 |
| The Game Awards 2025 | December 11 | 0 |
The 2026 show is one day earlier in the calendar, on Thursday, December 10. If The Game Awards keeps the same rhythm, the first round would close in early November, about two weeks before GTA 6 exists, and the final vote would land a few days after launch.
The three ways it could go
The Game Awards has not published its 2026 rules, so these are scenarios, not predictions:
- Eligible, but not nominated. If the 2026 cutoff falls on the third Friday of November, that is November 20, one day after GTA 6 launches. GTA 6 would be eligible for 2026, but first-round nominations would already be in before release. This is the outcome Pearce expects, and it has an awkward side effect: a game eligible in 2026 does not get a second chance in 2027.
- Pushed to 2027. If The Game Awards sets an earlier cutoff, before November 19, GTA 6 becomes a 2027 game and gets a full year of jurors playing it. It would then go up against whatever 2027 brings.
- Nominated anyway. If jurors get review code early enough to play it before the first round, GTA 6 could make the shortlist. Rockstar has not said anything about review copies or a review embargo, and Pearce's point is that even then, few jurors could finish an 80-hour game in time.

Where GTA 6 can still win: BAFTA and the D.I.C.E. Awards
The Game Awards is the loudest year-end show, but it is not the only one, and the others are kinder to a November 19 launch.
The BAFTA Games Awards 2027 cover games released between November 15, 2025 and November 19, 2026, so GTA 6's launch day is the last eligible day in the window. Entries for games released from August 1 to November 19 close on November 6, the longlist is announced on December 8, nominations follow on March 11, 2027, and the ceremony is in London on April 14, 2027. That gives BAFTA's voters, more than 1,700 games professionals, nearly four months with the game before nominations.
The 30th D.I.C.E. Awards, from the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, use a straight calendar year: games must be "publicly available in North America between January 1, 2026 and December 31, 2026." Submissions close December 8, Academy voting runs in January, and the winners are announced on February 18, 2027, in Las Vegas.
So if GTA 6 is as good as its trailers suggest, its Game of the Year moment is far more likely to come in February and April 2027 than in December 2026.
Does it matter?
For sales, no. GTA 5 did not need trophies to become one of the best-selling games ever made. For bragging rights, it is a real wrinkle: the biggest launch of the decade could miss the most-watched awards show of its own year on a technicality of timing. It would also hand 2026's Game of the Year to something else without the debate everyone expected.
There is one thing every scenario has in common: nobody has reviewed GTA 6 yet. Rockstar has not announced review code, an embargo or even the final age rating. Until then, every GOTY prediction is a vote for a game nobody outside Rockstar has finished. Our GTA 6 launch countdown tracks every date between now and November 19.
FAQ

Probably, if The Game Awards keeps its usual cutoff of the third Friday in November, which would be November 20, the day after GTA 6 launches. The 2026 rules have not been published.
Can GTA 6 win Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2026?
It is unlikely. Last year first-round jury nominations closed on November 4, before GTA 6's release date, and a multiple-time juror says jurors could not realistically play and vote for it in time.
When are The Game Awards 2026?
Thursday, December 10, 2026, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
What awards can GTA 6 win?
The BAFTA Games Awards 2027, whose eligibility window ends on November 19, 2026, and the D.I.C.E. Awards, which cover all of 2026 and announce winners on February 18, 2027, are both realistic. Both vote well after GTA 6's launch.
