GTA 6's Police System Is a Total Overhaul: Cops Off the Minimap, and They Remember Your Face
The old GTA trick of hiding in an alley and watching the minimap is dead. Between the official Extended Look and a sanctioned Rockstar North preview, GTA 6's wanted system now tracks your car, your clothes, and your face. Here is how losing the cops actually works now.

If there is one system that changes how GTA 6 plays more than any other, it is the police. Between the official Extended Look and a sanctioned Rockstar North preview shown to GTA creator The Gaming Gorilla (TGG), who watched developers run the game rather than playing it himself, a clear picture has emerged: the lazy GTA 5 habit of parking in an alley and staring at the minimap until the cops wander off is finished. Here is what has changed, split by what is corroborated and what is a single-preview account.
What is confirmed
The six-star wanted level is back. The Extended Look showed the sixth star returning, one above GTA 5's five-star ceiling.
Police are no longer dots on the minimap. Rockstar's own Dazed interview describes the search being conveyed on screen with a soft red-and-blue effect rather than tracked blips, so you actually have to pay attention to the world instead of the map.
The cops build a description of you. Reporting on the footage describes the police recognizing your vehicle, your appearance, and your clothing, surfaced as three HUD icons (a clothes hanger, a face, and a vehicle) under the wanted bar. They keep hunting on that description even after your stars drop.
So losing heat means changing what they know. You shake pursuit by changing your outfit and by switching, ditching, or repainting your car, which degrades the description and lets you move around even with stars still active. It is a real-time zone search: you are actively escaping a search area, not outrunning a timer.
Chases are more violent and physical. You can shoot out police tires to stop pursuers, and crashes cause heavy environmental damage. Because Jason and Lucia can split up, separating can help you lose a description built around the pair. And per Dazed, the world now reacts to you before you fire, openly carrying a rifle down the street draws attention from NPCs and police alike.
What TGG adds (treat as a single preview account)
TGG's preview filled in mechanics that no other outlet has corroborated from the sanctioned demo. Take these as his account, not confirmed Rockstar detail:
- Search circles. He described a darker inner circle where the crime happened and a lighter outer circle as the wider search area, with the goal being to get outside them. He also framed a full six-star wanted level as triggering a mapwide search.
- Vehicle trackers. Per TGG, some cars, and every cop car, carry trackers that give away your position, so stealing a police cruiser and expecting to lose the cops in it is a bad idea. He says you can have a tracker removed at a fence, but only after unlocking that ability, which is not available from the start.
- Pay 'n' Sprays are gated. He says the classic respray shops return, but you unlock them over time rather than having them all from the off.
- Smarter recognition. He describes the police keying on whether Jason and Lucia are together and even on the weapon you are holding.
We are deliberately not citing the leaked footage that has circulated for some of these mechanics. On this site, stolen build material does not count as corroboration, so where only TGG's sanctioned preview supports a detail, we flag it as exactly that.
The bottom line
The corroborated core is already a huge shift: no minimap cheese, a wanted system that remembers your car, clothes, and face, and escapes built on disguise and misdirection rather than driving in circles. TGG's account layers on trackers, search circles, and gated respray shops that, if accurate, make evading the law a genuine puzzle. All of it is pre-launch and could change before November 19, 2026.
