Stephen Root Is the First GTA 6 Actor to Confirm His Role: He Plays Brian Heder
Office Space and King of the Hill veteran Stephen Root has told the Associated Press he is in GTA 6, making him the first cast member on record. The role is Brian Heder, the Keys smuggler fans already recognised from his voice a year ago. Rockstar still has no official cast list.

Rockstar guards its cast like state secrets, so it took an actor to break the silence himself. Stephen Root, the character actor behind Milton in Office Space, Bill Dauterive in King of the Hill and Monroe Fuches in Barry, has confirmed to the Associated Press that he is in GTA 6. He is the first member of the cast to say so on the record.
What Root said
Speaking to the AP at the BAFTA TV Tea Party in Beverly Hills over Emmys weekend, Root was asked about the long-running rumours and did not dodge them: "Yeah, you're going to see me in there."
He also explained why the secret was never really a secret. His character, he said, appeared in the first rollout of GTA 6 almost a year ago, and a lot of people recognised his voice from King of the Hill, so it got divulged then. He added: "I'm so happy to be involved with it; it's an amazing thing to look at."
The role: Brian Heder
The character fans identified from that voice is Brian Heder, the veteran smuggler who lets Jason live rent-free on his property in the Leonida Keys in exchange for shakedowns and dirty work. Root's description of a character who showed up in last year's material lines up exactly with Heder's introduction, and the outlets that carried the AP interview report the role as Heder.
For anyone who has watched Root work for three decades, the casting makes immediate sense. Heder is a weathered, wry, faintly menacing old operator, precisely the register Root has been perfecting since Office Space. For the character's full background, see our Brian Heder profile.
Why this is a bigger deal than one casting
Rockstar does not publish cast lists before launch and did not comment on Root's remarks. For GTA 5, the actors behind Michael, Franklin and Trevor were only revealed around release. Rockstar prefers players to meet characters as characters, not as celebrity voices.
Root confirming his own involvement, casually, at a television industry party, is therefore an unusual crack in that wall. It is the first time anyone can say with certainty who voices a GTA 6 character, and it will inevitably fuel the guessing game about the rest of the cast. For the state of that guessing game before today, see our voice cast speculation piece.
What is still unconfirmed
To be clear about the limits: Root confirmed he is in the game. The identification of his character as Brian Heder comes from his voice in last year's trailer, his own account of appearing in that rollout, and the reporting around the interview, not from a Rockstar cast announcement. Every other GTA 6 voice remains unconfirmed, and treat any full cast list you see as speculation until Rockstar publishes one.
The bottom line
Stephen Root is in GTA 6, he said so himself, and the role is Brian Heder. That makes him the first confirmed member of a cast Rockstar has kept entirely under wraps ahead of the November 19, 2026 launch. For everything else officially confirmed about the game, see our Extended Look breakdown.
