GTA 6's Story Takes Around 80 Hours, Rockstar Confirms, Nearly Triple GTA 5
Rockstar's Rob Nelson has put a number on it: roughly 80 hours to get through GTA 6's main storyline. That is well beyond GTA 5's 30 and Red Dead Redemption 2's 50. Here is what that figure covers and what it does not.

For three years the honest answer to "how long is GTA 6?" was a shrug and a comparison to older games. Not anymore. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has given a figure: it takes around 80 hours to get through GTA 6's main storyline.
What the 80 hours covers
This is the important part. Nelson's number describes playing the necessary story missions to reach the credits, plus a bit of optional content along the way. It is not a completionist figure and it is not someone speedrunning with a guide open. It is a normal run through the campaign.
For a Grand Theft Auto game, that is an enormous number.
How it compares
Put it against Rockstar's own back catalogue and the jump is stark:
- GTA 5: roughly 30 hours for the main story.
- Red Dead Redemption 2: roughly 50 hours for the main story.
- GTA 6: roughly 80 hours.
That makes GTA 6's campaign comfortably the longest Rockstar has ever shipped, close to triple GTA 5 and more than half again on top of Red Dead 2, a game already famous for its length.
What about 100 percent?
If you want to see everything, expect considerably more. Outlets covering the figure put full completion somewhere in the 80 to 100-plus hour range once side content, activities, and collectibles are folded in. Treat that upper band as an estimate rather than an official Rockstar number, since Nelson's comment was specifically about the main storyline.
Given what has been confirmed about the sheer volume of optional systems, the gym and lifestyle progression, racing, the robbery ladder, and the wider state of Leonida, a completionist number well north of 100 hours would surprise nobody.
Why this matters more than a bragging number
Length on its own is not quality, and an 80-hour campaign is a real commitment for players with jobs and families. But it reframes what GTA 6 is trying to be. Two protagonists with intertwined arcs, a relationship system that shifts based on how you treat each other, and a state-sized map are hard to service in 30 hours. The number is consistent with a game built around living with these characters rather than sprinting through a crime plot.
It also lands well for a $80 to $100 purchase, and gives some weight to Rockstar's line that the game is close to done.
The bottom line
Around 80 hours for the main story, per Rockstar itself, against 30 for GTA 5 and 50 for Red Dead Redemption 2, with 100 percent completion likely pushing past 100. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. For the rest of what Rockstar has confirmed, see our Extended Look breakdown.
