GTA 6 Animals: 170+ Species Confirmed, and Every Animal Rockstar Has Shown in Leonida

GTA 6 has more than 170 animal species, Game Informer's cover story reveals: over 60 kinds of birds, more than 30 land mammals, and fish and reptiles, with manatees, flamingos, pelicans and alligators named. Here is every animal Rockstar has actually shown in its screenshots and art, from Grassrivers alligators to Keys iguanas and dolphins.

One of the quiet stars of GTA 6 is not a character at all. It is the wildlife. And as of September 29 there is a number on it: Game Informer's cover story says Leonida has more than 170 animal species. Here is what that includes, and every animal Rockstar has actually shown in its official screenshots and art, so you can tell the confirmed list from the wish list.

170 species, by the numbers

Game Informer's teaser promised a "staggering amount of wildlife – native and otherwise – roaming Leonida on land, air, and sea." The cover story delivered the count. According to VICE's summary, Leonida has over 170 animal species, including more than 60 types of birds, more than 30 land mammals and a variety of fish and reptiles, with manatees, flamingos, pelicans and alligators among those named.

"Native and otherwise" turned out to mean exactly that. Game Informer's free write-up says native animals "will coexist alongside invasive creatures such as green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats, and even rhesus macaque monkeys (Yes, Florida has monkeys)," and that several species have "never appeared in a Rockstar Game." Rockstar is also bringing over its Red Dead work, with "iridescence, bioluminescence, translucency, and feather types, plus new hair and fur systems for coats and pelts," and you can "track certain animals categorized as Rare, Discoverable, and Legendary." Their identities are being kept secret.

For scale: Red Dead Redemption 2, a game set almost entirely in the wilderness, was sold on "over 200 species" in 2018. GTA 6 is not far off that.

Every animal Rockstar has shown so far

These are the animals visible in Rockstar's own screenshots and artwork, not in leaks or fan lists.

Reptiles

American alligators. The mascot. One lies on the deck of an airboat in an official Grassrivers screenshot, several circle a swamp dock at night in the new Game Informer set, one bursts out of the water on the official cover art, and the first trailer had one wander into a convenience store.
Green iguanas. One suns itself on a rock in the Keys, another sits in the road in a Keys street scene, and they turn up in two of Rockstar's artworks.

Mammals

What we still do not know

Hunting and fishing. Neither has been detailed. One new screenshot shows a man with a scoped rifle on an ATV watching deer at a stream, which is suggestive, but Rockstar has not described hunting as a system.
How animals behave. Rockstar has not explained predators, herds or how wildlife reacts to you, beyond what the screenshots show.
The full species list. 170-plus is the total; only a handful have been named, and the Rare, Discoverable and Legendary animals are deliberately under wraps.

The bottom line

Leonida has more than 170 animal species, from the alligators of Grassrivers to the iguanas of the Keys, with over 60 kinds of birds and more than 30 land mammals, and the Game Informer screenshots show a wetland busier with animals than any GTA screenshot Rockstar has released before.
