The Doomsday Heist: GTA Online's Largest Heist, Explained
Three sub-heists, twelve setup missions, the Avenger and the Khanjali — the Doomsday Heist remains GTA Online's largest single content release.

Released in December 2017, the Doomsday Heist is GTA Online's biggest heist arc: three sub-heists totaling 12 setup missions plus three finales. It introduced the Avenger aircraft, the Khanjali rail-gun tank, the Akula stealth helicopter, the Thruster jetpack, and the Stromberg submarine-car. Below: what it is, how it works, and why it's still played in 2026.
Setup
The Doomsday Heist is run from the Facility — a $1.25M-$2.95M underground bunker accessible from various LS and Blaine County locations. Players need at least one Facility owner to host the heist (the Facility owner gets a setup-fee discount).
Crew: 2-4 players. Ideal: 4 players for difficulty / payout balance.
Act 1: The Data Breaches
4 setup missions + finale.
Plot: hack into the secret-government data servers across the LS metro, then breach the Bogdan Russian-mafia-controlled labs. The act introduces:
- The Avenger (cargo aircraft with pilot-and-crew operations)
- The Pyro (agile fighter jet)
- The Stromberg (submarine-converting supercar)
Setup mission times: ~15-25 minutes each.
Finale: breach a hidden mountain server complex. Combat-heavy.
Payout: ~$1.25M base × 4 players + Act 1 bonus.
Act 2: The Bogdan Problem
4 setup missions + finale.
Plot: take down Russian-mob figure Bogdan and his nuclear-arms operation. The act introduces:
- The Akula (stealth military helicopter)
- The Tula (V-22 Osprey-style aircraft)
- The Khanjali (rail-gun tank)
Setup mission times: ~15-25 minutes each.
Finale: confront Bogdan in a multi-stage facility battle.
Payout: ~$1.55M base × 4 players + Act 2 bonus.
Act 3: The Doomsday Scenario
4 setup missions + finale.
Plot: prevent the launch of a doomsday-scenario nuclear strike orchestrated by an FIB-affiliated villain. The act introduces:
- The Thruster (jetpack)
- The Volatol (bomber aircraft)
Setup mission times: ~20-30 minutes each.
Finale: the iconic finale is a multi-vehicle joint operation combining all the act's vehicles. One player drives the Thruster, one pilots the Volatol, the others run ground operations. The cinematics are some of the most ambitious GTA Online has ever shipped.
Payout: ~$1.5M base × 4 players + Act 3 bonus + first-completion bonus.
Total payout per player
If you complete all three acts cleanly, per-player payout is:
- Act 1: ~$1.25M
- Act 2: ~$1.55M
- Act 3: ~$1.5M
- Plus: $1M+ first-completion bonus per act
- Total: ~$5-7M per player for full Doomsday completion
The Doomsday Heist is the highest single-arc payout in GTA Online if you complete all three acts.
Difficulty
The Doomsday Heist is significantly harder than Pacific Standard or Cayo Perico:
- More complex objectives
- More cooperation required
- More likely to fail mid-mission with poor crew communication
- Specific role assignments matter (one driver, one shooter, one hacker, one breach)
For solo play, Doomsday is not solo-runnable. Minimum 2 players; 4 players is optimal.
Why it's still played
Several reasons the Doomsday Heist remains popular in 2026:
- The Khanjali rail-gun tank is one of GTA Online's most-iconic combat vehicles
- The Avenger is the most useful cargo aircraft in the game
- The first-completion bonus is a one-time $1M+ pickup per act
- The mission set is structurally distinct from any other GTA Online heist
- Veteran players still run it for the variety and the iconic vehicles
What carried into the rest of GTA Online
The Doomsday Heist's design philosophy — multi-act story arcs with shared vehicle introductions — became Rockstar's standard for major Online content. Subsequent heists (Diamond Casino, Cayo Perico, the Contract) all follow the multi-act structure.
The vehicles it introduced — Avenger, Khanjali, Akula, Stromberg, Thruster, Volatol — remain canonical GTA Online picks a decade later.
