Will GTA Online Shut Down When GTA 6 Launches? Every Dated Take-Two Statement Since 2025, and the One Time It Actually Happened
No. Take-Two has said GTA Online will be supported after GTA 6 on three separate occasions this year, most recently at last week's shareholder meeting. Here is every dated statement with its exact wording, the NBA 2K Online precedent Strauss Zelnick offered, the only GTA Online shutdown that has ever happened, and the questions nobody at Take-Two has answered.

Every time Rockstar or Take-Two says anything about GTA 6, the same question spikes: is GTA Online shutting down? It spiked again last week, when Strauss Zelnick was asked about it at Take-Two's annual shareholder meeting and most outlets ran his answer as a two-sentence blurb. So here is the full record. Take-Two has addressed the future of GTA Online on the record three times in 2026 and once, at length, in 2025, and the answer has been the same every time: no shutdown, continued support, no date for anything else.
What follows is every statement with its date and exact wording, what each one does and does not promise, the one precedent for Rockstar actually turning GTA Online off, and how all of it squares with the Twitch CEO's claim that GTA 6 multiplayer arrives next year.
Short answer
No shutdown has been announced, no shutdown has been hinted at, and Take-Two's CEO has said the opposite in February, August and September. GTA Online will keep running after November 19, 2026. What Take-Two has not said is how long the current update cadence lasts, whether a GTA 6 online mode exists, or when it would arrive. Those are the open questions, and they are different questions from "will the servers go dark."
September 17, 2026: the shareholder meeting
At Take-Two's 2026 Annual Meeting of Stockholders, Zelnick took a question on GTA Online. PC Gamer's Andy Chalk, the only outlet to attribute the answer to Zelnick by name, reported that he "reminded attendees that GTA 6 is 'a singleplayer experience,' and that GTA 5 Online 'continues to be a robust business for us' that Take-Two will continue to support."
A longer version circulated the same day: "GTA VI is a single-player title and is due to release this November. We will continue to support GTA Online after GTA VI release and beyond." That wording comes from a ResetEra transcription relayed by TechRadar, which names no speaker; PlayStation LifeStyle reprinted it and attributed it to Rockstar, which does not speak at Take-Two's shareholder meetings. It is consistent with PC Gamer's account, but treat "and beyond" as a transcription, not a verified quote. Our shareholder-meeting coverage has the rest of what was said that day.
August 7, 2026: "the cadence hasn't really changed"
On Take-Two's first-quarter fiscal 2027 earnings call, an analyst asked whether a higher frequency of GTA Online content updates would require more resources. Zelnick, per the call transcript: "Generally speaking, our update cadence for GTA Online has been pretty stable. And some of the updates have been amazing. Some have been less successful. But generally speaking, consumers really love them." Then the line that matters: "But the cadence hasn't really changed, and we do apply significant resources to that, and we expect to continue to support GTA Online going forward." TweakTown's same-day report renders the last clause as "we do expect to support GTA Online going forward"; the sense is identical.
The same call carried Take-Two's fiscal 2027 guidance, which runs through March 31, 2027, four months past GTA 6's launch. Within recurrent consumer spending, "the Grand Theft Auto series is expected to be up." A company planning to switch GTA Online off would not guide its spending up across the launch.
February 3, 2026: "every reason to believe we'll continue to support GTA Online"
On the third-quarter fiscal 2026 call, an analyst asked directly what would happen to "the current iteration" of GTA Online once GTA 6 came out. Zelnick first drew the line Take-Two always draws: "Rockstar Games is the locus of information about... where the titles go, content, and marketing," and Take-Two keeps "a pretty light touch" on the label's creative decisions. Then, as Kotaku reported it: "At the same time, I have every reason to believe we'll continue to support GTA Online. There's a great community that loves it, that stays engaged. And again in this quarter, Rockstar has shown that when you deliver great additional content, despite how long [GTA Online] has been at market, people show up."
The "people show up" line had a number behind it. On the same call, Take-Two's CFO reported that Grand Theft Auto Online recurrent consumer spending "increased 27%" year over year in the quarter ended December 31, 2025, which Zelnick credited to the A Safe House in the Hills update. GTA V had sold 225 million copies by that call and over 230 million by August.
February 14, 2025: the NBA 2K Online precedent
The most detailed answer predates all of this. In an interview with IGN's Wesley Yin-Poole ahead of the February 2025 earnings, Zelnick was asked about GTA Online's future after GTA 6 and prefaced his answer carefully: "I'm going to speak theoretically only because I'm not going to talk about a particular project when an announcement hasn't been made. But generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles."
Then the example: "As an example, we launched NBA 2K Online in China, I think originally in 2012, if I'm not mistaken. And then we launched NBA 2K Online 2 in China in 2017. If I'm not mistaken. We did not sunset Online 1. They both are still in the market, and they serve consumers, and they're alive, and we have this massive audience. So we've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them."
That is the closest Take-Two has come to describing a plan: two online games from the same franchise, running side by side for years, neither shut down. It was offered as a theoretical parallel, and Zelnick said so. It is still the best available read on how the company thinks.
What Take-Two has promised, and what it has not
| Promised, on the record | Not said, by anyone |
|---|---|
| GTA Online will be supported after GTA 6 launches (Feb, Aug, Sept 2026) | Any shutdown date, or any hint of one |
| The update cadence "hasn't really changed" and gets "significant resources" (Aug 2026) | Whether weekly updates continue into 2027 at the same scale |
| GTA spending guided up through March 2027 (Aug 2026) | Whether GTA 6 has an online mode, what it is called, or when it arrives |
| A willingness to run two online games in parallel (Feb 2025, theoretical) | Whether GTA$, characters or purchases carry over to anything |
The one time GTA Online actually shut down
It has happened once, and it is the precedent for how Rockstar would do it again. On June 16, 2021, Rockstar announced on its Newswire that GTA Online for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 would shut down on December 16, 2021. That was six months' notice, with Shark Card sales on those platforms ending September 15, 2021, and GTA V's story mode left playable. The current-gen versions carried on untouched. If Rockstar ever retires the PS4 and Xbox One versions of GTA Online, or the whole game, expect the same shape: a Newswire post, a date months out, and a specific platform list. Nothing of the kind has been posted.
The closer analogue to what people actually fear, a game that is alive but no longer growing, is Red Dead Online. On July 7, 2022, Rockstar wrote that it planned "to build upon existing modes and add new Telegram Missions this year, rather than delivering major themed content updates like in previous years." Red Dead Online is still online today. That is what "stepping back" looks like at Rockstar, and Take-Two has said GTA Online's cadence has not changed.
What support looks like this month
The abstract commitments have a concrete September behind them. The Business Rivalries event has given away a free business property every week (an Arcadius office, the Grapeseed Clubhouse, the Grapeseed Bunker, and the Elysian Island Nightclub from September 24) with four GTA$1,000,000 Weekly Challenges, per Worthplaying's reprint of the September 3 update notes. The Pegassi Horus arrived September 10 for GTA+ members and went on general sale September 17. Rockstar's own nopixel V roleplay beta is running with Twitch Drops through September 30. None of that is the behaviour of a game being wound down; our guide to this week's deadlines has the details.
GTA 6 Online is a different question
Twitch CEO Dan Clancy told Bloomberg last week that after GTA 6's launch there will be "an even bigger [bump] next year when they launch multiplayer." As we explained at the time, Bloomberg framed that as Clancy's anticipation, not a Rockstar announcement, and Rockstar has said nothing beyond the PlayStation.com FAQ line that "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience."
The two threads do not contradict each other. Zelnick's statements are about the existing GTA Online continuing. Clancy's remark is about a new multiplayer mode for GTA 6 arriving later. Take-Two's own NBA 2K Online example describes exactly that combination: a new online game launches, the old one keeps running. What nobody official has said is the date, the name, or whether anything transfers. Our GTA 6 Online: everything we know tracks that side.
A note on "the last major update"
In July we described the Kortz Center Heist as widely regarded as GTA Online's last major content drop, in a piece about the GTA 6 era beginning. That was the community's read, and it may yet prove right about the scale of future updates. But nothing from Rockstar or Take-Two has said it, and three weeks after that piece Zelnick said the cadence had not changed. The honest framing is that support is confirmed and the size of future drops is the open question.
FAQ
Will GTA 5 Online still work after November 19? Yes. No shutdown has been announced, and Take-Two has said three times this year that it will continue to support GTA Online after GTA 6.
Is GTA Online ending in 2026? No. The only GTA Online shutdown ever announced was for PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2021, with six months' notice. Nothing comparable has been posted for any current platform.
Will my GTA$ or characters carry over to GTA 6? Nothing has been said about any transfer, and no GTA 6 online mode has been announced to transfer into.
Is there a GTA 6 Online release date? No. The only public timing is a Twitch executive's expectation of "next year," which Rockstar has not confirmed.
