It consists of ten lessons in the form of selectable courses, each completed by achieving at least a bronze medal in the final results. All ten lessons are required for the story progression.
Mission failure will occur if the player is wasted or ditches the plane during the mission (indirectly destroying it). Colliding with anything or landing outside of the airstrip will normally boot the player to the results screen with a failing grade, though rarely the plane will instead explode, killing the player.
