In all of its appearances, the weapon is designed after the real-world or one of its many variants. The weapon goes on to appear in the where it is named the Assault Rifle.
The AK47 has appeared in almost all games in the . The weapon's name on the HUD has changed various times as it recurred through the series: *In GTA III, the rifle is named AK47. *In GTA Advance, the rifle is named Assault Rifle. *In GTA San Andreas, the rifle is once again named AK47. It is also referred to as the AK-47 (note the hyphen) within the stats menu. *In GTA Liberty City Stories and GTA Vice City Stories, the rifle is named simply AK.
Across the , the AK47 was always the cheapest and most traditional assault rifle of every game, as opposed to the more contemporary and expensive M16, as well as being a common sight in the hands of many gangs in the later missions throughout the games.
