GTA 5 Murder Mystery: Solving the Leonora Johnson Case
The GTA 5 murder mystery hides 50 Leonora Johnson letter scraps across Los Santos. Here is how to find them, name the killer, and unlock A Starlet in Vinewood.

The GTA 5 murder mystery is one of the game's most rewarding side hunts: track down 50 Leonora Johnson letter scraps scattered across Los Santos and Blaine County, piece the torn confession back together, and you name the man who killed a 1970s Vinewood starlet. Solving it unlocks the "A Mystery, Solved" achievement and the Strangers and Freaks mission "A Starlet in Vinewood." Here is exactly how the case works and what you get for cracking it.
What the GTA 5 murder mystery is about
The story behind the Leonora Johnson letters is pure noir. In 1975, Vinewood actress Leonora Johnson was brutally murdered, and her dismembered body was discovered at the Land Act Dam. Shortly after, her killer mailed a written confession to David Richards, the founder of Richards Majestic Productions. That confession was later torn into 50 pieces and scattered across the state.
Collecting those torn fragments is the in-game collectible set called Letter Scraps. Each one is a small, glowing slip of paper. Read all 50 and the game reconstructs the full confession, revealing the identity of the man responsible. This is the murder mystery that runs underneath the main story, and you can start chasing it almost from the moment you reach Los Santos.
How many letter scraps are there and when they unlock
There are exactly 50 Leonora Johnson letter scraps. They become available after you complete the early Franklin mission "Repossession," and from that point on they appear all at once across the map.
Any of the three protagonists can pick them up: Michael, Franklin, or Trevor can all grab scraps, and your progress is shared across the trio, so you do not have to collect all 50 with a single character. That makes the hunt easy to chip away at while you switch between the main story missions. For the wider checklist and other collectible sets, see our GTA 5 game hub.
Where the Leonora Johnson letter scraps are hidden
The 50 scraps are spread from the heart of the city out into the rural north. Notable spots that show up on most location guides include:
- On top of the letter "I" in the VINEWOOD sign, reached by climbing the ladder behind it
- The Los Santos River storm drain canals downtown
- The river bank area near Lago Zancudo out west
- A rock formation at the northern tip of Raton Canyon, which you reach by helicopter
- The roof of the "Sightings" bar near Los Santos International Airport, accessible by helicopter or parachute
- The outdoor lounge and ping-pong area in Vinewood Hills
A handful of scraps sit on rooftops or remote peaks that realistically need a helicopter, so it helps to save the hardest few for a single aerial sweep. If you want to grab a chopper fast while hunting, our GTA 5 cheats list covers the spawn codes.
Who killed Leonora Johnson
Once all 50 fragments are in hand, the reconstructed confession names the killer: former Vinewood director Peter Dreyfuss. He wrote the letter to his friend David Richards, confessing to the murder, and he is still living in a mansion in Vinewood Hills decades later.
Completing the set unlocks "A Starlet in Vinewood," a Strangers and Freaks mission that only Franklin can play, even though all three characters can collect the scraps. Franklin drives up to Dreyfuss's house to confront him. Dreyfuss, meditating in his backyard, panics the moment Franklin reveals he knows the truth, and he runs.
The A Starlet in Vinewood mission and its reward
Here is the part players most often ask about: "A Starlet in Vinewood" pays no cash reward. The payoff is the resolution itself plus your progress toward 100% completion, not money.
After Dreyfuss flees, the mission becomes a chase. You can choose to kill or spare him, but the single Gold Medal objective, labeled "Cut!," requires you to kill Dreyfuss. Putting him down is therefore the route to the gold medal and, for most players, the canonical ending of the case. The mission counts toward 100% completion, so it is essential if you are chasing a full clear.
Reading all 50 scraps and finishing the mission also unlocks the "A Mystery, Solved" achievement and trophy, which is the formal reward for closing the Leonora Johnson case.
How it connects to the wider GTA 5 mysteries
The Leonora Johnson case is the most structured of GTA 5's murder mysteries, but it is not the only dark secret buried in the map. The game is famous for its Infinity Killer Easter egg, a separate piece of side content built around serial killer Merle Abrahams and the "Infinite 8" murders of 1999. Clues to that one are scrawled on rocks in the Senora Desert and on a wall inside Bolingbroke Penitentiary, and eight plastic-wrapped bodies rest on the seabed off North Point, north of Paleto Bay.
That Infinity Killer content is an environmental mystery with no formal mission, unlike the letter scraps, which feed directly into a playable Strangers and Freaks job. Together they show how Rockstar layered detective-style storytelling across Los Santos. For an up-close look at the locations, the GTA 5 screenshots gallery is a good starting point.
