Jason Duval is one of the two playable leads in Grand Theft Auto VI — the man waiting outside the prison gates when Lucia walks out in Trailer 2. Rockstar has released a real, specific amount about him: an official character bio, two trailers, and the Newswire copy attached to them. It has also left large parts of him deliberately blank. Below: the confirmed Jason, separated cleanly from everything the internet has filled in around him.
The most authoritative source on Jason is the character bio on Rockstar's official Grand Theft Auto VI site. It reads, in full:
"Jason grew up around grifters and crooks. After a stint in the Army trying to shake off his troubled teens, he found himself in the Keys doing what he knows best, working for local drug runners. Jason wants an easy life, but things just keep getting harder. Meeting Lucia could be the best or worst thing to ever happen to him."
Four biographical facts come straight out of that paragraph, and they are the only ones Rockstar has formally stated:
That fourth point is the character, not just trivia. Rockstar's own framing makes Jason a reluctant criminal — competent at the work, tired of it, hoping for the simple version of a life that the plot is about to take away from him. Everything you have read beyond those four points — his exact age, a named unit or rank, a pre-game body count, the origin of the Duval surname — is not in the bio and has not been stated anywhere official.
Jason's on-screen history is short and easy to date precisely.
Trailer 1 (December 2023) introduced Lucia by name during her incarceration scene. A male partner figure appears in the footage, but Rockstar did not name him in the trailer or its Newswire post. For roughly seventeen months, "Jason" was a community label attached to an unnamed man.
Trailer 2 (May 6, 2025) settled it. Rockstar named Jason Duval in the accompanying Newswire copy and confirmed that he and Lucia are both playable. The trailer — captured in-game on a PlayStation 5 — opens on Lucia's release from prison with Jason there waiting, then runs through the pair partying, traveling, and working jobs together. The Newswire framing described them as "two outsiders trying to make their way through the seedy streets of modern Vice City and Leonida," and stated that "their bond is at the center of the game."
That last line carries weight. "Their bond" is partnership-anchor language, not a betrayal-arc tease — closer to the Bonnie-and-Clyde template Rockstar has openly used than to the parallel-stories model of GTA V.
Jason is one half of the first dual-protagonist structure in a mainline Grand Theft Auto. GTA V split three playable men across intersecting solo arcs; GTA 6 builds its campaign around two leads whose relationship Rockstar has placed at the center of the game.

Jason's place in that sentence is the "easy score gone wrong" — the man who wanted the simple job and got the conspiracy instead. Jason's archetype is familiar even if his billing is new. The reluctant-criminal lead runs through the series: Niko Bellic wanted out of the life and kept getting pulled back; Michael De Santa was a retired man whose old job refused to stay buried. Jason's bio — a soldier who tried to go straight, then drifted into drug work, now wanting an easy life — sits in that same lineage of men who are good at crime and sick of it.
What's genuinely new is the shared lead. Every prior mainline GTA gave you a single protagonist at a time, even in GTA V's three-hander, where the men ran separate arcs that crossed at heists. Jason doesn't get a solo story that intersects with Lucia's — Rockstar's "their bond is at the center" language describes a paired campaign, the first time the series has built its spine around a relationship rather than an individual.
Jason's biography is geography as much as backstory. Rockstar has confirmed the setting is Leonida, a fictional state modeled on Florida, with a modern, reshaped Vice City at its core and the Leonida Keys — the island chain his bio places him in — to the south. Rockstar's own phrase for the tone is "the darkest side of the sunniest place in America."
