No GTA 6 at State of Play, Exactly as Rockstar Said, and Don't Expect It This Week Either
GTA 6 didn't appear at Sony's June 2 State of Play, just as Take-Two's own comments predicted. It won't be at Summer Game Fest or the Xbox showcase either. Here is why Rockstar is sitting out showcase season, and the only place GTA 6 will actually appear.

Sony's State of Play on June 2 came and went without a single frame of Grand Theft Auto 6. No trailer, no logo, no PS5 bundle tease, nothing. If that sounds like a letdown, it shouldn't, because it is exactly what Take-Two told everyone would happen. We said before the show that a GTA 6 appearance was a long shot, for reasons that were officially on the record, and the night played out precisely that way. Here is why the no-show was the safest prediction in gaming, and why you should set the same expectation for the rest of this week's showcases.
What we said, and what happened
Ahead of the broadcast, we laid out three officially-grounded reasons GTA 6 almost certainly would not appear: Take-Two said marketing has not started, Rockstar reveals GTA on its own channels rather than third-party stages, and Sony gave no tease. All three held. The State of Play opened with Marvel's Wolverine and closed with a God of War Laufey reveal, with more than 20 titles in between, and not one of them was from Rockstar.
This was not a surprise to anyone reading Take-Two's own words. It was the base case.
Why Rockstar sat it out
The core reason is timing. On the May 21 earnings call, CEO Strauss Zelnick said Rockstar will begin marketing GTA 6 only "when it's summertime," and clarified that means the end of June or early July. June 2 is simply too early. The marketing window has not opened.
The second reason is habit. Rockstar has a long, consistent track record of not unveiling GTA at other companies' showcases. GTA 5 never appeared at E3. The two GTA 6 trailers both arrived as standalone Rockstar Newswire events, on Rockstar's schedule, with the spotlight entirely on the game. Dropping a GTA 6 moment into a Sony broadcast would break a pattern Rockstar has held for over a decade.
Don't expect it at Summer Game Fest or the Xbox showcase either
Here is the practical takeaway for the days ahead, because the showcases are not done. Summer Game Fest Live runs Friday, June 5, and the Xbox Games Showcase is Sunday, June 7. Both are part of the busiest week of the gaming calendar, and both will generate the same "maybe GTA 6 will surprise us" hope that State of Play did.
Apply the same logic and the same answer holds: GTA 6 is not expected at either. The marketing window still has not opened by June 7, Rockstar still does not reveal GTA at third-party events, and neither Geoff Keighley's show nor Microsoft has teased a Rockstar appearance. If you tune into Summer Game Fest or the Xbox showcase specifically for GTA 6, you are setting yourself up for the same non-event. Watch them for everything else, because there is plenty, just not for this.
The only place GTA 6 will actually appear
When GTA 6 finally breaks its silence, it will happen in one place: a Rockstar Games Newswire post, on Rockstar's own terms. That is where Trailer 1 and Trailer 2 landed, and it is where Trailer 3, preorders and the price are all expected to arrive together this summer, most likely in the late June to early July window Zelnick pointed to. We break down that timeline in our summer reveal explainer.
So the rule for the next few weeks is simple. Ignore the showcases for GTA 6 news, and watch the Newswire. The moment a GTA-6-tagged post appears there, the summer campaign has begun. Until then, every "GTA 6 at [showcase]" headline is hope, not reporting.
The honest read
There is a small irony in a game generating this much showcase-season anticipation while refusing to participate in showcase season at all. But that refusal is the strategy. Rockstar does not need a shared stage, a host's introduction, or a sizzle reel slotted between other publishers' trailers. It gets to own the entire conversation the day it chooses to start, and it has told us that day is coming this summer. State of Play was never going to be it. Neither is the rest of this week.
