GTA Online Career Progression: Which Path to Choose
Five career paths gate distinct GTA Online progression — Executive, Bounty Hunter, Hitman, MC President, Heister. Here's the comparison and which to choose.

GTA Online's Career Progression system, introduced in late 2023, gates distinct progression rewards behind one of five career paths. Each path emphasises a different gameplay style and rewards a unique mask / outfit / weapon set at its own milestones. Below: the comparison.
How careers work
Each player chooses one career path at any given time. Progress is tracked via career-specific actions:
- Executive progresses by running CEO crates and special-cargo missions
- Bounty Hunter progresses by completing Salvage Yard contracts and bail-bond targets
- Hitman progresses by completing assassination missions and headshot kills
- MC President progresses by managing biker businesses and MC clubhouse missions
- Heister progresses by completing heists (any heist, any approach)
You can switch careers at any time, but progress in the abandoned career resets. Pick the one that aligns with your already-preferred playstyle.
Career path 1: Executive
Progression actions:
- Source and sell special cargo crates
- Run CEO Vehicle Cargo missions
- Buy and run a Special Cargo warehouse
Milestone rewards:
- Special Executive masks
- Suit-and-tie outfits
- The "CEO" career title and badge
- Special vehicle access at premium dealerships
Best for: players who like business management more than direct combat.
Career path 2: Bounty Hunter
Progression actions:
- Complete Salvage Yard contracts
- Hunt down bail-bond targets
- Recover stolen vehicles
Milestone rewards:
- Hunter outfits and accessories
- Specific weapon variants (Sawed-Off Shotgun, etc.)
- Custom vehicle camos (military, hunter)
- The Bounty Hunter career title
Best for: players who like mid-tier hunting and chase content. Less combat-intensive than Hitman.
Career path 3: Hitman
Progression actions:
- Complete assassination missions
- Headshot kills (in PvE and PvP)
- Specific contract targets via the agency
Milestone rewards:
- Tactical gear and combat outfits
- Sniper rifle variants
- Custom weapon attachments
- The Hitman career title
Best for: players who like PvP and combat-heavy content.
Career path 4: MC President
Progression actions:
- Run MC clubhouse businesses
- Complete MC president missions
- Cocaine / Meth / Counterfeit Cash sells
Milestone rewards:
- Biker outfits and patches
- Custom motorcycle variants
- The MC President career title
- Specific business bonuses
Best for: players who like the MC business loop and biker aesthetic.
Career path 5: Heister
Progression actions:
- Complete heists (any major heist counts)
- Run heist setups
- Achieve specific heist completion conditions
Milestone rewards:
- Heist-specific outfits
- The Heister career title
- Custom Hawk & Little weapons
- Vault-themed cosmetics
Best for: most-played career path — heists are the primary GTA Online endgame content, so this is the natural progression for most players.
Which to choose
If you're a new GTA Online player in 2026:
- Heister if you plan to grind Cayo Perico (most efficient)
- Hitman if you enjoy combat-heavy content
- Executive if you want passive-business income with progression
- MC President if you've already invested in MC clubhouse
- Bounty Hunter if you want variety without committing to one playstyle
Career progression timing
Each career has roughly 8-10 progression tiers. Reaching the highest tier takes 40-80 hours of focused play depending on path.
The Heister path is usually the fastest because Cayo Perico runs naturally rack up heist completions. The Bounty Hunter path is the slowest because Salvage Yard contracts have a daily cap.
What career progression doesn't unlock
A few things career progression doesn't unlock:
- Vehicles (most vehicles are direct GTA$ purchases)
- Properties (apartments, businesses)
- Weapons in general (most weapons are unlocked via Career Progression mastery, but some are tied to other progression systems)
- Heist primary loot (career progression doesn't affect heist payouts)
Switching careers
Switching paths costs no GTA$ but resets the abandoned career's progress. You can switch back; progress restarts.
If you're undecided, stick with Heister for the first 50 hours — the variety of heist content covers most career-progression bases. Switch only after you've hit a definitive preference.
