GTA 5 Fort Zancudo: How to Get In and Steal the Jet
Fort Zancudo is the GTA 5 military base hiding a fighter jet and tank. Here is how to get in, survive the wanted level, and steal the P-996 Lazer.

Fort Zancudo is the GTA 5 military base tucked into the west side of San Andreas, and it is one of the most dangerous places a player can wander into. The base hides a P-996 Lazer fighter jet, armored vehicles, and a four-star wanted level that triggers the moment soldiers spot you. This guide covers where Fort Zancudo is, how to get in, what you can steal, and how to survive the response.
Where Is Fort Zancudo in GTA 5
Fort Zancudo sits on the western edge of the map at Lago Zancudo, below the North Chumash beach and next to Mount Josiah. It belongs to Blaine County and runs along the coast, so you can reach it by driving north up the western highway or by flying in along the shoreline.
The base does not appear as a labeled point on the default in-game map, which is why so many players stumble onto it by accident. You can see its long runway and cluster of hangars clearly on the satellite layer of the pause map once you know where to look. A wide concrete airstrip running roughly north to south is the dead giveaway.
The Instant Wanted Level Inside the Base
Fort Zancudo is built around a harsh rule: cross the perimeter on foot or by ground vehicle, and the military hits you with an instant four-star wanted level the moment you are detected. This is not a slow escalation like in the city. Once a soldier spots you inside the fences, the response is immediate and heavy, with armed troops, gun trucks, and armored support converging on your position.
Flying behaves a little differently. If you pass over the airspace or fire a weapon near the base, you pick up a two-star wanted level first. Keep circling after the warnings and that climbs to four stars, at which point P-996 Lazers scramble to shoot you down with heat-seeking missiles and cannon fire.
How to Get Into Fort Zancudo
There are several proven ways to breach the perimeter:
- Fast vehicle ramp: Drive a quick car straight at the outer fence near the north or east side and use the terrain to jump or punch through.
- Motorcycle through the gates: A nimble bike lets you slip past the checkpoint barriers before guards close in.
- Parachute in: Bail out of a plane or helicopter high above the base and drop straight onto the runway near the aircraft.
- Buy a hangar (GTA Online only): Owning a Fort Zancudo hangar gives you free access with no wanted level (more on that below).
Speed matters on every ground approach. You will be attacked almost immediately, so plan your route to your target vehicle before you cross the line, not after.
Stealing the P-996 Lazer Jet
The Fort Zancudo jet, the P-996 Lazer, is the prize most players come for. The Lazer spawns on the runway, on the taxiways, and parked inside the large open hangars. Two of them commonly sit near the airstrip behind the main runway, which makes the open hangar down the strip your best target once you are inside.
To pull it off:
- Approach with a plan to reach the nearest hangar or runway aircraft fast.
- Get into the Lazer before the four-star response overwhelms you.
- Take off immediately and gain altitude, because the heaviest threats once you are airborne are pursuing Lazers and missiles.
- Fly low and weave to break missile locks until your wanted level cools down.
The Lazer is armed with a cannon and homing missiles, so once you are airborne and have shaken pursuit, you are flying one of the strongest aircraft in the game.
The Rhino Tank and the Hangars
Many players expect to find a parked Rhino tank ready to steal, but there is no reliably parked Rhino sitting in the open at Fort Zancudo in story mode. Armored vehicles and tank-style support typically appear as part of the military response after you have already drawn the wanted level, so grabbing one means surviving the firefight first.
If you simply want the tank without the risk, the Rhino can be purchased in GTA Online from Warstock Cache & Carry for $1,500,000. The hangars themselves are worth exploring on foot for aircraft, fuel trucks, and other military vehicles scattered around the airstrip and the area near the control tower.
Survival Tactics
Fort Zancudo will kill an unprepared player in seconds. A few tactics improve your odds:
- Wear body armor and carry heavy weapons before you approach. You will take fire the instant you are spotted.
- Use the invincibility cheat in story mode if you only want the jet. The cheat grants roughly five minutes of invincibility and must be re-entered when it runs out. See our GTA 5 cheats page for the full input.
- Have an escape plan. The fastest exit is the air, so prioritize reaching an aircraft rather than fighting on the ground.
- Cool the wanted level by altitude and distance. Once you are flying the Lazer, put space between yourself and the base and break line of sight to lose the stars.
In GTA Online, the cleanest route is ownership. The Smuggler's Run update added three purchasable Fort Zancudo hangars priced at $2,085,000, $2,650,000, and $3,250,000. Buying one lets you enter the base freely with no wanted level, which turns the most hostile location in the game into your private airfield.
