Is GTA 6 Coming to Switch 2? Nintendo's President Says It's Up to Rockstar, and No, She Didn't Say Switch 2 Can Run It
Asked about GTA 6 on Switch 2, Nintendo of America president Devon Pritchard told Variety it is 'a conversation for Take Two and Rockstar, but nothing to announce on my end at this time.' Several sites have reported that Nintendo said Switch 2 can run GTA 6. She didn't: that line was Variety's. Here is what was actually said, Rockstar's history on Nintendo hardware, and what Switch 2 owners can play instead.

GTA 6 launches on November 19 on PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and Series S. The one current console missing is the Nintendo Switch 2, and last week Nintendo was finally asked about it on the record. Nintendo of America president Devon Pritchard didn't say yes, and she didn't say no:
“That's going to be a conversation for Take Two and Rockstar, but nothing to announce on my end at this time.”
That is from Variety's interview with Pritchard, published on October 9. Since then, a few sites have run headlines saying Nintendo confirmed the Switch 2 can run GTA 6. It didn't. Here is what was actually said, where the confusion came from, and what Rockstar's track record says about a Nintendo version.
What Devon Pritchard actually said
Pritchard took over from Doug Bowser as president of Nintendo of America in January. Variety's profile of her first year covers the Switch 2, the Zelda 40th anniversary and the live-action Zelda movie. The GTA 6 part is two sentences. Here is the passage in full:
Is the Switch 2 tent big enough to accommodate "Grand Theft Auto VI" (with its M rating for adult content and themes), due out in November and the most anticipated gaming title of the year? The console certainly has the horsepower to host the M-rated "GTA 6," but for now Pritchard won't say if the title is coming to the platform.
"That's going to be a conversation for Take Two and Rockstar, but nothing to announce on my end at this time," Pritchard says.
The only words in quotation marks are hers, and they are a polite deflection. "The console certainly has the horsepower" is the writer's own framing, not something Pritchard is quoted saying. So when you see "Nintendo says Switch 2 can run GTA 6", that is a reading of Variety's prose, not a Nintendo statement. As GameSpot put it, she "didn't say yes or no." Kotaku's summary was that "even if it remains a mystery whether the Switch 2 is capable of satisfactorily running GTA 6," Pritchard "suggested it wasn't up to her."
She is right about whose decision it is. Ports are made and paid for by the publisher. Nintendo can court a game, but it cannot announce one.
Why people are asking now
Three things put the question on the table this month.
- Switch 2 is a hit. Variety reports Switch 2 has sold more than 23 million units since its June 2025 launch.
- Big third-party games are arriving. Variety notes that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 comes to Switch 2 this fall, the first Call of Duty on a Nintendo console in more than a decade. If Activision's shooter fits, people reasonably ask whether Rockstar's game could.
- Nintendo's own November. The Ocarina of Time remake launches on Switch 2 on November 5, two weeks before GTA 6. Variety calls it "the only high-profile game brave enough to go up against" GTA 6's launch window, a rivalry SNL turned into a sketch, as we covered in our SNL piece.
On Take-Two's side, GameSpot notes that CEO Strauss Zelnick has called himself a "big believer" in Switch 2 and said there is a "great" opportunity to bring older titles to it, while adding that Take-Two "would not necessarily bring every title to the platform." That is the most anyone at Take-Two has said, and it is not about GTA 6.
There is also an older rumour: GameSpot reports that in May 2025 an industry insider claimed Rockstar had run tests of GTA 6 on Switch 2, then clarified that such tests are routine and did not mean a port was planned. Nothing official has followed.
Rockstar's history on Nintendo hardware
Rockstar has a long and patchy record on Nintendo platforms. Its older games tend to arrive, sometimes years later. Its biggest modern releases never have.
| Game | Nintendo version |
|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto (1997) and GTA 2 | Game Boy Color versions, 1999 and 2000 |
| GTA Advance | Game Boy Advance, 2004 |
| GTA: Chinatown Wars | Nintendo DS exclusive at launch, 2009 |
| L.A. Noire | Switch, 2017 |
| GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition | Switch, 2021 |
| Red Dead Redemption | Switch, 2023 |
| GTA 4, GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption 2 | Never released on a Nintendo console |
GTA 5 has been on three console generations and still hasn't come to Switch or Switch 2. Kotaku points out that GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 are two of the only four games in the all-time top ten best-sellers that aren't on Switch 2. Virtuos, the studio that ported L.A. Noire to Switch, told Pocket Tactics it is "eager to adapt Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2" for Nintendo's hardware, as Kotaku reported, but that is a contractor's wish, not a plan.
So will GTA 6 ever come to Switch 2?
Nobody who decides has said. What we can say from the record:
- Not at launch. GTA 6 is announced for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, and nothing else.
- Rockstar ports late. GTA 5 took 19 months to reach PC, and Red Dead Redemption 2 took 13. A Switch 2 version, if it happened, would follow that pattern rather than beat it. Our GTA 6 PC explainer covers that timeline.
- It is a business call, not a hardware question. Pritchard's answer puts the decision with Take-Two and Rockstar, and neither has commented.
If an older Rockstar game on Switch 2 is more likely than GTA 6 in the near term, the obvious candidates are the ones Kotaku names: GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.
If you only own a Switch 2
You can't play GTA 6 on it, and there is no cloud version for Nintendo hardware either; even Xbox has ruled out streaming GTA 6 to PC, as we explained in our Xbox cloud piece. For GTA on Switch 2 today, the GTA Trilogy (GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas) is the way in, and Vice City is the best warm-up for Leonida. Our Vice City Definitive Edition comparison covers how the remaster holds up. For GTA 6 itself, you will need a PS5 or an Xbox Series X|S, and our PS5 or Xbox guide can help you choose.
