GTA 4 Villains: Dimitri Rascalov, Jimmy Pegorino and Betrayal
A guide to the GTA 4 villains: Dimitri Rascalov, Mikhail Faustin, Ray Boccino and Jimmy Pegorino, and how both endings trace back to Dimitri's betrayal.

The GTA 4 villains are not a single mastermind but a chain of liars, and the strongest link is Dimitri Rascalov. Across nearly 90 story missions in Liberty City, Niko Bellic works for four men who each use him and discard him: Mikhail Faustin, Dimitri, Ray Boccino and Jimmy Pegorino. Every betrayal feeds the next, and both of the game's endings circle back to the same Russian who broke his word first.
Mikhail Faustin: the first employer who gets Niko in too deep
Niko's criminal career in GTA IV starts under Mikhail Faustin, a volatile Russian mobster who runs the Faustin-Rascalov operation out of Hove Beach. Faustin exploited an immigration loophole to settle in Liberty City in the mid-1990s and built a racket around protection, cocaine and stolen goods. He is voiced by Czech actor Karel Roden, who also voices Wade "The Fixer" Johnson in the same game.
Faustin's problem is that he is reckless. He orders hits on the wrong people, including Kenny Petrovic's son Lenny, which puts his entire crew on Petrovic's kill list. That recklessness is what marks him for death, and it is his own business partner who arranges it.
Dimitri Rascalov: the betrayal that drives the whole story
Dimitri Rascalov is the cold half of the Faustin-Rascalov partnership and the true engine of the plot. Voiced by Moti Margolin, Dimitri presents himself as the reasonable one, the man who can calm Faustin's chaos and keep Niko safe. He is lying every time.
His first betrayal targets his own partner. In the mission The Master and the Molotov, Dimitri convinces Niko that killing Faustin is the only way to satisfy Petrovic and protect them both. Niko corners Faustin at the Perestroika nightclub and kills him on the rooftop. With his last words, Faustin warns that Dimitri will turn on Niko next. He is right.
The second betrayal comes immediately. In Russian Revolution, Niko goes to a warehouse in East Hook to collect payment for Faustin's death. Instead of cash, he finds Dimitri standing beside Ray Bulgarin, the human smuggler Niko worked for in Eastern Europe and who blames Niko for a sunken trafficking boat. Dimitri sells Niko out on the spot. The shootout that follows turns Dimitri from employer into Niko's personal enemy for the rest of the game.
Ray Boccino: the made man with the diamond deal
Further into the story, Niko falls in with the Italian mob through Ray Boccino, a capo in the Pegorino crime family who also runs a side business in stolen diamonds. Boccino is voiced by Joe Barbara. He is less a grand villain than a mid-level operator whose greed creates one of the game's biggest disasters.
Boccino gets hold of a batch of stolen diamonds and sends Niko to sell them at the Libertonian museum in Algonquin. The deal collapses into a three-way mess between Niko, Johnny Klebitz of The Lost MC, and Luis Lopez of The Ballad of Gay Tony, all caught up over the same stones. Boccino's poor planning makes an enemy of nearly everyone. He pays for it in the mission Pest Control, where Pegorino, suspecting an informant in his ranks, orders Niko to kill him.
Jimmy Pegorino: the desperate boss and the final job
Jimmy Pegorino is the secondary antagonist and the man who delivers Niko to his last choice. James "Jimmy" Pegorino is the boss of the Pegorino crime family, operating from a mansion in Westdyke, Alderney, and he is voiced by Tony Patellis. His defining frustration is rejection: Liberty City's established families refuse to grant the Pegorinos a seat on the Commission, and his paranoia grows as the walls close in.
Pegorino's last act is to arrange a heroin deal, and the buyer is none other than Dimitri Rascalov. That single detail is what fuses every villain's thread into one knot. The man who betrayed Niko first is back at the center of the final job, and Pegorino asks Niko to do business with him. Niko's answer splits the game in two.
How both endings trace back to Dimitri
The closing choice in GTA IV is a moral binary, and both branches lead back to Dimitri Rascalov. You can read the full breakdown in our GTA IV endings explained guide, but here is how the villains line up.
- The Deal path. Niko takes Pegorino's job and goes to collect the payment for the heroin deal in the mission If the Price Is Right. Dimitri double-crosses everyone again, killing the buyers' men and keeping the heroin for himself, and Niko has to shoot his way out to recover the cash. A hired gunman of Dimitri's later kills Roman at the wedding. Niko hunts Dimitri down and executes him in A Revenger's Tragedy, then deals with Pegorino.
- The Revenge path. Niko refuses to deal with the man who sold him out. He tracks Dimitri to the freighter Platypus and kills him in A Dish Served Cold. A ruined Pegorino opens fire at the wedding, kills Kate McReary by mistake, and Niko chases him to his death in Out of Commission.
Either way, Dimitri dies by Niko's hand, and either way the cost is someone Niko loves. The whole tragedy is downstream of one warehouse in East Hook where a man chose to sell out a partner he had promised to protect.
The villains ranked by damage done
If you measure these GTA 4 villains by the wreckage they leave behind, the order is clear. Faustin sets the dominoes up. Boccino knocks over a side row with the diamonds. Pegorino lights the fuse on the finale. But Dimitri Rascalov is the one who breaks faith first, betrays the most people, and stands at the center of both endings. He is the closest thing GTA IV has to a true archvillain, and the rare antagonist in the series whose death is guaranteed no matter which path the player walks.
