How Big Is GTA 6's Map? What Rockstar Confirmed vs What a Creator Preview Claims
Rockstar has given one official size figure and a staggering animation count. A sanctioned Rockstar North preview relayed much bigger numbers. Here is the difference between what Rockstar actually said and what a single creator reported, plus why 'alive' matters more than 'big.'

"How big is the map" is the single most-asked GTA 6 question, and there are now two very different answers floating around. One set of numbers comes straight from Rockstar. The other comes from GTA creator The Gaming Gorilla (TGG), who watched a sanctioned developer-driven preview at Rockstar North and relayed figures attributed to co-head of development Rob Nelson. They are not the same, so here is exactly what each one is.
What Rockstar has officially said
Rockstar has been careful with map-size claims, and has given just one hard comparison. Speaking to the New York Times, the studio said the GTA 6 map is three times as large as the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2. That "playable area" wording matters, it is a specific comparison, not a loose "three times Red Dead."
The same New York Times piece dropped a more telling figure: GTA 6 runs on well over 600,000 animations, against roughly 55,000 in GTA 5 and 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2. That number says more about the game than any square mileage, because it points at how much more the world can actually do.
Importantly, Rockstar has not published a square-mile or square-kilometre size for the map. Any exact area figure you see is an estimate, not an official spec.
What TGG relayed from the preview
At the preview, TGG says Rob Nelson gave him a set of comparisons. These are a single creator's verbal relay of a private session, so treat them as reported, not confirmed:
- The GTA 6 map is twice the size of GTA 5's map.
- Vice City itself is twice the size of Los Santos.
- Vice City and its surrounding suburbs are eleven times bigger than Los Santos and its surrounds.
The first figure is actually more conservative than fan mapping projects, which have pegged the world closer to 2.4 to 2.7 times GTA 5. The eleven-times claim is the eye-catching one and also the least corroborated, so flag it hardest of all. None of these three numbers has been published by Rockstar, so do not treat them as official.
Why "alive" matters more than "big"
The more important takeaway from the preview is not a number at all. Rob Nelson's thesis, laid out in Rockstar's Dazed interview, is that this world feels alive rather than scripted, and that every decision carries more weight than in past games. Other outlets that saw the game came away with the same impression: NME described a more grounded, less cartoonish tone, and Insider Gaming noted that your choices genuinely reshape Jason and Lucia.
That is the real headline. A map twice the size means little if it is empty. What Rockstar keeps stressing, and what the 600,000-plus animations back up, is density: NPCs with routines, a world that reacts, and consequences that follow you. A big map you can turn your brain off in is a GTA 5 idea. GTA 6 is chasing a map that makes you pay attention.
The bottom line
Officially, GTA 6's map is three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2, powered by more than 600,000 animations, with no official area figure published. The bigger, punchier numbers, twice GTA 5, Vice City double Los Santos, surrounds eleven times larger, come from The Gaming Gorilla's account of a sanctioned preview and are not Rockstar-confirmed. As always, everything is pre-launch and subject to change before November 19, 2026.
