GTA 6 Preload Starts November 12: File Size, Unlock Times, and What's Actually Confirmed
Preload opens a week before launch, there is no disc in the physical box, Rockstar has published no install size, and the game does not unlock at your local midnight. Here is what is confirmed, what is only read off store listings, and which viral numbers are fabricated.

GTA 6 launches Thursday, November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The questions now are logistical, and the answers are a mix of hard facts and figures that people keep repeating without checking. Here is the split.
The short version: preload opens November 12, confirmed by Rockstar. There is no official install size, and every GB figure circulating is an estimate or a fake. The game unlocks in regional waves, and not at your own local midnight.
Preload: the one hard date
Rockstar's pre-order press release is unambiguous: players who pre-order digital versions "will be able to begin pre-loading on November 12, 2026 to ensure they are able to play at launch on November 19, 2026."
That is one date covering both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no difference drawn between them. Note what Rockstar gave and what it did not: a date, not a clock time. Claims that preload "begins at midnight local time" are not in the press release. That phrasing belongs to a different announcement, the one saying pre-orders opened on June 25 at midnight local time.
Preloading is also not early access. It downloads and installs the files so you are ready the moment the game unlocks. Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick has said publicly that no edition grants early access, so the Ultimate Edition does not get you in sooner either.
Making sure the preload actually starts
- PS5: enable automatic downloads. For the download to run in rest mode you also need Stay Connected to the Internet switched on.
- Xbox: enable automatic downloads and keep the console in Sleep rather than full shutdown.
One PS5 refund detail worth knowing before you start: after release you can only request a refund within 14 days of placing the pre-order, and only if the content has not been downloaded or preloaded. That window runs from your purchase date, not from launch, so for anyone who pre-ordered in June it has already closed. Starting the preload closes the remaining route.
There is no disc
This catches people every time. The physical edition of GTA 6 is a download code in the box, not a disc. The boxed Standard Edition goes on sale November 12 specifically so buyers can start preloading alongside everyone else.
Two consequences. First, physical buyers still download the entire game, so the storage question applies to you exactly as it does to digital buyers. Second, a late delivery shortens your preload window. Only the $79.99 Standard Edition is boxed at all; the $99.99 Ultimate Edition is digital-only.
File size: nothing official exists yet
Rockstar has published no install size, download size, or storage requirement. That was verified against the official GTA VI page and Rockstar's own support articles. Neither storefront carries a real number either: the PlayStation listing has no storage section, and the Xbox listing's only size value is a pre-order placeholder of about 328.8MB, which is obviously a stub rather than the game.
So anyone quoting you an exact figure today is guessing. What we can do honestly is bound the problem with verified comparables:
- GTA V Enhanced: about 86.8GB on PS5, about 94.2GB on Xbox Series X|S
- Red Dead Redemption 2: advertised a 105GB minimum
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: roughly 145GB to 150GB, the modern high-water mark on PS5
A game of GTA 6's scope landing somewhere above Red Dead 2 and in the rough neighbourhood of the largest current-gen installs is the reasonable expectation. GamesRadar's estimate sits around 120GB to 130GB and up. Treat all of that as a band, not a number.
For planning, the figures that are actually confirmed are your console's usable storage:
- PS5 (base): 667GB usable, PS5 Slim about 842GB, PS5 Pro about 1.89TB
- Xbox Series X: 802GB usable
- Xbox Series S (512GB model): 364GB usable, 1TB model over 800GB
Series S owners on the 512GB model are the ones who should be clearing space now.
The numbers to ignore
- 676.7GB. The viral screenshot came from a self-identified parody account. The giveaway is that it shows Xbox One compatibility for a game that is not releasing on Xbox One, and the figure exceeds the base PS5's entire 667GB of usable storage.
- 750GB and "400 hours of gameplay." A dead 2022 leak-era rumour, dismissed even by outlets that ran it at the time.
- A 113GB "GTA 6 ISO." TechRadar found it is 99.99% zero padding wrapped around malware. There is no early build to download.
- The 150GB to 200GB tables on content farms. No primary sourcing behind any of them.
Unlock times: store-derived, not announced
Read this attribution before the numbers. Rockstar has not announced an unlock schedule. The region-by-region timetable in circulation originates from a fan-site compilation that read availability timestamps off the PlayStation Store country selector, and was then picked up by IGN, GameSpot, Kotaku and others. It is visible store metadata rather than a leak, but it is also not an announcement, and store timestamps routinely change before a major launch. Times below are accurate as of September 11, 2026.
On that data, GTA 6 unlocks in about 15 windows spanning roughly 19 hours, from 11:00 UTC on November 18 to 06:00 UTC on November 19:
- New Zealand first, at 11:00 UTC on November 18, which is midnight NZDT on the 19th
- UK, Ireland, Portugal and Iceland at 00:00 UTC on November 19
- US and Canada at 05:00 UTC on November 19
- Mexico and Central America last, at 06:00 UTC on November 19
No timestamps have surfaced for Bahrain, China, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman or Qatar. Microsoft has published no equivalent breakdown, so there is no store-derived Xbox schedule.
The nuance most coverage gets wrong
It is not your local midnight. It is midnight in each region's primary time zone, which is a single fixed instant for everyone in that region.
The US is the clearest example. One unlock moment at 05:00 UTC means midnight Eastern, so:
- East Coast: 12:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 19
- Pacific: 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 18, three hours before their own midnight
Europe works the same way, with 19 Central European countries all unlocking together at 23:00 UTC. If you have seen "GTA 6 unlocks at midnight where you live," that is wrong for most of North America and Europe.
The Xbox region switch, and why PS5 owners are stuck
Because the rollout is staggered, a reported workaround on Xbox is to set the console region to New Zealand and unlock on New Zealand's schedule. Caveats stack up: it needs the preload already finished, it is not sanctioned, it can be closed server-side at any time, and changing region affects store currency and payment methods.
It does not work on PS5. A PlayStation Network account's country is fixed at creation and purchases are tied to it, so switching console region changes nothing. A separate New Zealand account would need its own New Zealand-funded copy of the game.
What could still change
Rockstar has to submit the package to Sony and Microsoft before preload opens, so a real install size should be readable on both storefronts by November 12 at the latest, replacing the Xbox stub. Store unlock timestamps can move, and more regions may be added. If Rockstar posts launch timing officially in the final fortnight, the unlock section stops being store-derived and becomes confirmed. We will update this piece as those land.
The bottom line
Preload opens November 12 on both platforms and the physical edition is a code, not a disc. No official file size exists yet, so clear space using your console's usable storage as the guide and ignore the viral GB screenshots. The game unlocks in regional waves on November 19, at each region's primary-time-zone midnight rather than your own. For everything else about the game itself, see our Extended Look gameplay breakdown and the confirmed 80-hour story length.
Update log
- September 11, 2026: corrected the physical edition section (there is no disc), removed unsourced install-size estimates in favour of verified comparables, and added attribution to the store-derived unlock timetable.
